What is your opinion on Black poverty in America? Systematic repression or they aren't trying hard enough to rise up?

Systemic repression is the dominant force behind it. I'm not ignorant or overly forgiving of poor individual choices leading to bad economic outcomes. There is plenty of that going on but it's not a uniquely black phenomenon either.
I personally have seen how society hamstrings them. I've got stories from older family members about how black people were treated.

How older were the older family members, and were they referring to bad things that happened while they were grown ups or while they were children?

After slavery was abolished and reconstruction came to an end one family member was still fricking their "field slaves" around 1910. I don't know what they actually were but they still called them slaves when recounting the story. He ended up fathering numerous children with his field slaves. He had to purchase an exorbitantly expensive, small patch of land to bury those kids in. It was expensive because of the skin color of the people who were going to be buried there.

You asked about older family members so I went with the oldest story I remembered. Growing up in the 80/90's I remember black people essentially not being allowed into half the town. Our town was tiny to the point where you could walk the entirety of every street in a few hours. Yet I never once went into the black part of town. I wasn't a racist child I was simply instructed that it was too dangerous to go that way.
