Eh, that's not really a good analogy. For the first decades of the roman empire, people didn't actually know they were in the 'empire' phase. Eventually subsequent emperors hollowed out every roman institution and the authoritorian elements were layered over the existing republican institutions, then they always gave out bribes to the public to placate them.
I guess the equivalent would be if Trump stripped away all power from the congress, but gave out 10k to each american, so you would have millions of r-slurs going 'demonrats never gave me 10k, why would I care about these values', celebrating the fact that they just took one big step towards authocracy. The same way Augustus wrote his book where he framed all his actions as saving the republic, while in fact, he destroyed it in all but name.
All I'm trying to say is, democracy is a fragile thing that is in our shared interest (except if you think you are going to be a chinovnik under the new regime), but poors will too often fall for demagogy because they are more impressed by charisma than reason.

Scope, record keeping, organization, etc is nice, but eventually it just comes down to whether there are people who are willing to enforce what's written on a piece of paper.
