I really don't think subs are necessary in the first place. Unless we had a userbase that was unmanageably large then why segment posts? Like, I get that furries like to have a safe space but is it worth pointless space where carp posts random duck pics simply for the sake of filling up a sub? (The answer is no)
If anything, I'd recommend adding tags so users can filter out truly dumb and pointless shit (e.g. furrycel posts).
On the inverse however, if you're going to leave subs open then maybe a nice way to incentivize paypigs to keep paypigging is to only give creation permissions to a certain tier.

At minimum when you pin award a post made to a sub that post should display for all users who have not specifically blocked that sub IMO.
Pin awards could be used to "amplify" a sub temporarily and draw in new users, but most of the time the legacy browsing experience would be preserved.
As it stands right now, pinning a post in a sub is a waste of DC because even though it's pinned only like 3 ppl will see it before the pin expires.
As long as engagement with subs stays low there's no real reason to post there...which means no content is there to drive engagement. Vicious circle, etc.
3 possible futures for subs:
Keep them off the main feed but allow pins to surface subposts into that feed. Subs continue to exist as a sort of "drama underground" where the mole people sneed and sneer about their favorite/least-favorite topics. Maybe also increase the DC payout for posting and interactions on subs to incentivize posting there?
Do away with separate main feed and subs and reorganize the whole thing so main feed becomes a sub of its own and then everything is consistent and equal. The reddit model. (Ew, gross)
Do away with subs entirely and stick to legacy drama with just one main feed.
