Hello everyone,
We would like to quickly announce that we will no longer affiliate our self with /r/volunteersForUkraine effective immediately.
The reason(s) for this is a lot of Russian propaganda bots/apologists have been infesting said sub-reddit and the moderation team appears to fail at taking control of things.
The second reason is; next week we will be holding a AMA with a NGO that has the exact same name and we need users to be aware that the NGO has NO affiliation with said sub-reddit you'll be receiving more information regarding the AMA within the next upcoming days.
We would also like to thank all of you for the continue support and reporting of posts.
As always, Π‘Π»Π°Π²Π° Π£ΠΊΡΠ°ΠΈΠ½ΠΈ.
As one of the newer mods of that sub, I can tell you it is heavily targeted by pro-russian trolls/bots, 4chan /pol/ brigades, /r/genzedong and /r/conspiracy users, etc. The sub is a magnet for trolls trying to convince people not to help Ukraine.
I believe the original mod team was just overwhelmed. Things are improving again, but the amount of bans has not slowed after some major house cleaning. Thereβs a constant effort by pro-russians to sow groomercord.
Jesus, i never even knew /r/conspiracy even existed. I just had a look they are absolutely fricking chicken oriental that lot. Anti-vax, deep state, pro-Putin they're all in there.
As one of the mods of Ukrainian-language sub /r/Ukraine_UA, I support distancing the /r/Ukraine community from /r/volunteersForUkraine
EDIT: See my reply in my post here that illustrates how the mod team at /r/volunteersForUkraine has become shady to say the least:
https://old.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/tgwyf9/hi_folks_we_just_launched_a_new_subreddit/
EDIT2: copy-pasting my comment from that discussion for visibility :
Not sure what unfortunate thing happened to /r/VolunteersForUkraine , but basically it got taken over by 'questionable' mods.
I mean I cannot find a single excuse to remove an OFFICIAL video from Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs encouraging folks to join Ukrainian Foreign Legion: https://old.reddit.com/r/volunteersForUkraine/comments/tctn84/to_veterans_of_uniformed_services_of_the_free/
I wrote a message to mods asking what exactly triggered their decision, but after a few days -> zero response.
The only way I can interpret it, is that the mod team of /r/VolunteersForUkraine is - how to say it politely - compromised.
p.s. Equally 'baffling' is why would a mod team of a sub supposedly dedicated to foreign military volunteers wanting to join UFL remove a post with Ukrainian Public Broadcaster UA:Suspilne's video interview of volunteers ( https://old.reddit.com/r/volunteersForUkraine/comments/tcyje1/member_of_ukrainian_foreign_legion_on_the_fight/ ) . Again I cannot find an adequate reason why would they do that (beyond mod team being compromised).
p.p.s. And I'm not gonna even going to talk about the proliferation of - to put it mildly - questionable posts with videos purporting rather questionable things (that are likely Russia's disinfo). Those posts do not get removed, so, you know, make your own conclusions from this fact...

You can tell the people who have learned about war from video games because they think helmets actually protect from rifles.

Not a single person is like "okay but you'll break your neck anyway so who cares" because they're, at best, specialists who got out after one enlistment cause it was just too hard

I've seen a few liveleak (rip) videos of soldiers taking a round to the helmet and surviving, but it seemed like the exception rather than the rule.

iirc Some of the newer US army helmets (which are not available on the civilian market) are capable of reliably deflecting 7.62x39 at a few hundred meters.
