It all falls within the "women lying to each other" umbrella. This is your girlfriend telling her fat friend "you're beautiful the way you are, men must just be intimidated because you're ___," but on a societal scale instead.
If we ever get around to accepting that "toxic femininity" can exist, this behavior would be the prime example. Lying to someone to spare their feelings, even though reality absolutely does not reflect what you're saying, just makes the person you're "helping" more isolated.
