AskRDrama thread: What do you think is the direcition of military tech and how far has it come since the past decades?

Military technology is one of those weird spaces where it seems to upgrade like crazy and still be stuck at the same place at the same time depending on where you look.

For Example - The M2 heavy machine gun ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M2_Browning ) continues to be in service in the US military since 1933. On the other hand the Advanced Combat Helmet's ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Combat_Helmet ) have been in use since 2003.

On the other hand while there seems to be little change in the mass manufacturing of small arms and provisions in the US army, there are still little upgrades being made, such as the fact that starting in 2022, the XM5 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM5 ) is expected to replace the currently common M4A1 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_carbine ) model as standard use.

The Specialist orgs seem to be seeing faster changes in the equipment supplied to them however. Such as the fact that they were seeing increase used of the FN Scar H rifles ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_SCAR ) long before the general military arm.

The most advancements seem to be made in terms of fighter jets where the f35 lightning II remains at the lead since it began production in 2006.( https://www.aerotime.aero/articles/30000-top-10-most-advanced-fighter-jets-of-2022 )

In terms of tanks however the US seems to be left behind ( http://www.military-today.com/tanks/top_10_main_battle_tanks.htm ), with the most advanced tanks in the world being developed in Europe and Russia. Likely due to the fact that as drone warfare advances Tanks begin to lose their value in warfare.

The future of modern warfare is likely to be something where drone warfare becomes an integral part of all future warfare, but beyond this everything else moves at a multi decade glacial pace of development and integration among the boots on the ground. We may also begin to see very common use of one robot unit in every squad on deployment ( https://www.analyticsinsight.net/top-10-scary-military-robots-in-use-the-terrifying-tales/) . Other than this however, future warfare is likely to remain very recognizable, with current troops using the same armaments as what was used in our grandparents generation.

Conclusion :

The human troops gear aspect of military advancements is being left behind as they are likely to be replaced by autonomous systems and robots in the near future, fields where the most advancements in terms of military research is being made.
