r/Ottawa hustle and bustlecels sneed about rent

https://old.reddit.com/r/ottawa/comments/vgpgav/how_are_you_supposed_to_live_here_on_1500_per_hour?sort=controversial

From our OP

how do you divide a month into 160 hours full time? most sites say 30-40 hours per week is full time, so 130 per month is considered the "average"

What do you mean I can't afford an apartment downtown working 32.5 hours a week :soycry:

Centretown’s average household income among property owners in between 85k and 90k.

In 2020 the household median income was 66k.

So yeah, Ottawa is quite a prohibitive market. So are the overwhelming majority of major cities in the country. It’s a real problem.

:#marseygigaretard:

Using one bedrooms as a gauge for where min wage should be would not work, everyone would need to make 60k ish to be able to live on their own comofortably, and thats about double min wage. You cant just double min wage without wrecking everything.

maybe i'm a wacky leftist but... good? lets make everyone get 60k?? why not?

If you read anything in this thread read this chain, truly the peak of reddit financial literacy.

If you work for minimum wage sorry, you shouldn't expect to live on your own. Not in today's world.

What the actual frick am I reading. If you've been dealt a bad spawn and bad cards at life, you 100% deserve to be able to live somewhere and alone. I've found yet another reason to hate our society. Can't believe people like you actually exist. Cannot live alone because you make min wage wtf???

Oh and before you label me, I make 75k a year so no I'm not someone else who is making min wage and trying to leech the system.

Being born a leaf is tantamount to being griefed every day of your life :marseyagree:

That map seems to be just the city centre and... well... yeah? You are not going to be able to live in the city centre on the minimum. Anywhere. It's not like bus drivers got 3-room flats in the city centre in USSR, either. Limited resources are always going to have to have a limited access :marseyshrug:

I would get it if it was any other city but living in Ottawa's downtown core (lol) is having the hustle and bustle costs without any of the hustle and bustle.

Yeah ottawa is the most boring city/"capital" I've ever been to. You probably have more hustle and bustle in fricking mississauga

Like seriously, just move to Gatineau. It's cheaper and more fun.

God redditcels are entitled.

I live here, the problem is that everything here in this shitshow country is expensive. Whether it's the $15 chicken, $5 broccoli and $5/lb mushrooms at the grocery store, the $3.70 for the sub par public transit, or the over $1000/month my wife and I pay for a bachelor apartment. It's all ridiculously over priced and it wouldn't be so bad if the gouging wasn't coming from all sides.

Oh, I don't doubt you, I've heard a lot of "interesting" things about Canadian rents in general. I'm not suggesting that they're reasonable. I'm just saying that literally nowhere in time and space would a person making local minimum salary would be able to afford to live in the city centre :marseyshrug: It's something that would literally be impossible to accomplish.

When I was a younger man, you could pull of living in downtown Ottawa by yourself on a minimum wage job if you were willing to pound the pavement looking for places that weren't listed in the classifieds and being willing to put your nose down in certain other aspects of your life. I think part of the issue was that because Ottawa is considered a boring and undesirable place to live, it wasn't really in line with somewhere like Toronto and it's just been a massive correction over the last couple of decades because people will just take what they can get at this point.

We can pull it off down here with two rather meager salaries, but it's a conscious choice we make to be able to walk anywhere we need to go.

I knew some people that went to UOttawa who all said it was lacking in the "hustle and bustle" aspect. I heard a lot of people live in Gatineau and just Communte but I have no idea how the commute/how expensive places there are.

It is lacking in the hustle and bustle, that's what I like about it. It's a city of a million people with all of the amenities and it's usually boring as shit. Gatineau/Hull used to be considerably cheaper than here but the issue was the public transit. When I lived in Gatineau, I was working till midnight and the last bus home left at around 11pm. That left me with an almost 90 minute walk home every night after work. (It sucked aside from the one Halloween I ate some shrooms and wound up walking home and talking with Jim Morrison along the way.)

Now Gatineau is just all around shitty and filled with pissy Quepeckers.

>the $15 chicken, $5 broccoli and $5/lb mushrooms at the grocery store,

maple syrup has plenty of calories and it grows on (in) trees, learn to adapt and forage like the rest of the anarchists living in big cities

It's a capital. :marseyshrug:

All that wealth from taxes is being transferred into that city, so don't be surprised to see higher prices there. Same with DC and its surrounding areas.

Average house price in this city is 800k. I really need to get out of here but it's tough to figure out where to go.

Holy frick these redditors think you could live without roommates on minimum wage at any point in modern history. In some ways, they have an even rosier view of the past than rightoids.

People should be able to live alone on minimum wage. Min wage workers fuel downtown. They shouldn't be priced out of where they work.

:marseybrainlet: Everyone should be able to afford to live on their own in the most desirable areas.

Do they realize more than 1 person can live in a house or apartment? Redditors are so lonely they don't realize other people exist

I think the thing i hate most about progressives is the way the constantly make excuses when someone provides them a solution. Go live in the suburbs if you can’t afford downtown “ohhh but i’m disabled (read: fat or anxiety)”. Go find a better job “ohhh but i don’t have any skills”.

These people truly are children. Progressives from families with money embrace their extended childhood by going to grad school and getting doctorates because they too don’t have any skills so they just remain in a classroom from the age of 5 to 30. Progressives from families without money get booted in to the world and then complain that they don’t live in a penthouse in a prime location even though they work 32.5 hours a week as a barista.

Living in a 2-bedroom Malibu flat is a human right and if it can only be secured by revolution, then so be it.

Maybe you should go talk to some psychologists before offering an option. First off, it's obvious that your only exposure to kink has been through porn. There's nothing wrong with a naked body, it just provides a teachable moment. Kids in Europe are exposed to way more nudity than the kids in the US, and they turn out fine.

Kink is not sexual abuse, but you're trying to equate the two because that's YOUR current understanding of what kink is, which is wrong. There's nothing wrong with a child seeing someone in bdsm get up, you just have to explain that some adults like dressing up in costumes. Kinksters at Pride are not engaged in s*x acts, and you shouldn't confuse their self-expression with obscenity.
