This fails to explain why black american populations were much more high functioning prior to the civil rights movement, with single motherhood exploding after, despite racism going down in America year by year.

I think it's a combination of the legitimate alienation you mentioned, but also a black culture that developed a victimhood complex and never recovered, cheered on by a pseudoscientific, anti-american left wing steadily gaining influence since the 60s, undermining black american culture ever since and grooming them into being against the things they claim are 'whiteness', like punctuality, work ethic, rational thinking, or rugged individualism.

They were't really high functioning lol. But also most black people just thought that was the way things were supposed to be - which dampens resentment.
