Maybe a simple form of flood protection? Grab the ip of the client making the request until the request is satisfied, so that you can serialize them? This avoids one host w/the same IP sending dozens or hundreds of requests all at once? Though if someone were intent on damage, avoiding doing a full query and return is probably closing the barn door after the animals have left, since just hitting the host with sufficient traffic of any kind would be enough to choke it.
