Yet another Rings of Power Trailer - LOTRcels on suicide watch

Endless nerd slapfights across five subs. Here are a few choice comments.

It’s amazing how wide the gap is between Tolkien prose and dialogue and these amateurs, even when they cherry pick it for a minute long trailer. If they actually use any Tolkien dialogue in this it will stick out like a sore thumb, like a Kardashian suddenly spouting Shakespeare.

:#marseyshakespeare:

This looks sooo bad. Like Wheel of Time with an extra few hundred million dollars. The dialogue sounds like MCU cringe.

:#marseydisintegrate:

Oh you best believe I’ll be rewatching this multiple times to try to pick out every detail I can. The shot of Telperion and Laurelin literally sent chills down my spine.

People who post on reddit about chills should be sterilized. CMV

Hope I see fewer "generic fantasy" complaints after this. Looks fantastic.

I mean, still looks very generic fantasy to me.

No

yes

Explain to me what that means.

Fantasy setting that is created generically to appeal to mass audience and ignores the core of the setting's lore and world for the simplicity general masses.

Ok. Now provide evidence of that from the trailer.

SOURCE? SOURCE?! I NEED A SOURCE

I think the numbers are showing that the tide is about to turn in a positive direction on public opinion of this show. Currently sitting at 303 comments for this post with fans excited and discussing the tiniest aspects and plot points. However, over at /r/Rings_Of_Power, the most pessimistic hate-filled sub surrounding this show, the post of this teaser only has 4 comments and I think it's because even the majority there have to finally admit that this looks and feels like Middle-Earth and they just can't bring themselves to do it after months and months of blind rage. Just silence. Even the 4 current comments are sitting on the reaction of "meh", rather than straight up rage, which is the closest thing you can get to praise over there.

Thanks kid found a new hate sub to browse

Here’s my question/concern. You look at the credits of the two show runners. Per IMDB they have an earlier draft credit for Flash Gordon from the 1980s and an uncredited writer credit for Star Trek Beyond. If that legit is all they have, why the heck would Amazon drop their half a billion dollar project on absolute unknowns?

Yikes sweaty, the only thing that matters is their lived experience and the funding of our DEI initiatives. Past experience is literally white supremacy.

This looks like the porn parody without the porn.

I think porn these days has better acting and writing tbh

:#coomer:

A hundred billion dollars spent on this and they still couldn't make the guy at 1:05 not look like a cosplayer.

:#marseyyugi::#marseyanime::#marstolfo:

Did the dialogue feel a bit rough from Elrond and Galadriel at all?

Both sound like living breathing stereotypes in that exchange. Hope it's shitty trailer editing, but then again I've seen what Amazon did to Wheel of Time

There is a saying in my country "start with burned potato then everything will taste good". WOT is the burned potato of amazon.

RIP LOTR universe.

It’s a teaser and you’re already whining. All Tolkien’s writing is still there, if you don’t want to watch it don’t, you can READ about the second age and stop being a downer for people looking forward to this

Not wanting the most loved and influential fantasy universe to be shit on is not being a downer. Realism and pessimism are not the same thing.

:#marseysoycry: LET PEOPLE ENJOY THINGS

Prepare for article after article of "toxic, bigoted, racist fandom." They've already been written.

I need some entertainment consoomer to explain to me what this new formula of high-budget, shiny effects, expensive costumes and props but absolutely dogshit dialogue, plots and acting is all about often with some provocative diversity casting in the mix as well and usually involving a well-loved IP.

Wheel of Time, this, the new Star Trek shows, a bunch of Disney shit and I'm guessing, the new Dragonshit prequeal/sequel/whatever almost certainly.

Is it purely down to incompetent and untalented writers? Like, studios can't find decent writing staff no matter how much money they've got so we end up with nothing but empty sassy quips and "badass" zingers?

I can't believe it. Which means there must be a reason for it and someone must know what it is.

Because the industry and the viewers are so focused on established properties, they decide they are going to make a new thing from an old thing, then get writers. In Amazon LOTR case, they signed a deal costing $250000000 at the start.

Instead of a writer saying, here is my new best idea, it's a business decision that starts the process. Then the writers have to pretend they care about LOTR, or Star Trek, or the Game of Thrones books, comics whatever to get a gig. So they bullshit and then cook up some lame shit.

I think it's a few different chickens come to roost. These are my speculations:

The MCU made a boatload of money, and it was started in part by Joss Whedon who has a very quippy dialogue style where characters don't have their own character voice. The generation of writers in their teens while the MCU began are now entering the workforce, and they (subconsciously or not) ape this style which is pretty tired by this point.

Ever soaring budgets, along with liberal trends among hollywood creatives, encourage attempts to be safe with their casting. Picking diverse casts keeps the twitter mob happy, and likely keeps the staff happy. I think internal pressures from the creatives is a point that is not often discussed, but the culture of tech and media north american cities must influence how these shows are made.

Finally, another impact of high budgets is reluctance to take risks on new IPs. It's easier to take a well known IP and adapt it to what is popular, even if it's mega cringe. Perhaps the new lord of the ring tv show would look less cringe to us if it wasn't the shambling corpse of one of the most beloved stories by nerds; as it stands the new show looks uncanny to us and the flaws are even more apparent.

What do you think of this, long post bot?

Too many cooks in the kitchen, then the studio forces everyone to do what they say, so even if someone does have a good idea it gets twisted into garbage.

They hire 7-8 writers to write 1-2 episodes each, and expect for that to come together to generate coherent and moving character arcs, even though it’s none of the individual writers visions.

With Rings of Power, the writers were probably attached to the show just so they can say “Diverse staff of writers that have worked on projects like The Sopranos, GoT, Fringe, Stranger Things, Star Trek..”, but they don’t get to do anything but look at the studio’s script.

Add in different directors and producers for different episodes, and you end up with shows that feel disjointed because the studio tries too hard to hit all their focus-grouped spots, and loses the story telling along the way.
