Pretty simple. The effects of policy is often not felt until a few years after it's put into place. Republicans wreck economies, leaving it for democrats to clean it up. During the clean up phase, everyone blames the democrats.

Take inflation right now, after really bad recessions, there is often a period of high inflation during the recovery. We had a very steep recession under Trump. He had already took the wind out of Obama's economy with his idiotic tariffs and the fed was lowering rates to contain the damage, and then COVID hit. And Trump made COVID way worse than it had to be with his whole "nothing to worry about, it's just a hoax" official line.

Democrats are now cleaning up the Trump mess, and getting blamed for doing it. Economy is going to be humming again within the next couple of years, voters are going to switch parties in power again, and start their adoration for the Republicans economic skills, despite the fact all they're doing is coasting on the momentum of their democratic predecessor. Reagan did it after Carter did the hard work of fixing the Nixon/Ford mess. W Bush did it and Clinton cleaned up the Reagon/Bush mess. Trump did it after Obama cleaned up the Bush mess. And the next Republican president will do it after Biden cleans up Trump's mess.
