The Standards of Care document linked to a website, the Eunuch Archive. Users who sign up are asked to select their interests from options including “forced castration” and “smooth look”. Data from the website is used to indicate the prevalence of eunuchs, demonstrating a “large online peer-support community.”

The paper notes that according to the Eunuch Archive, it has 130,000 registered members, adding that two threads giving instructions for self castration by injection of different toxins directly into the testicles each have more than 2,000 posts and have each been read over one million times.

Other organisations to endorse eunuch as a gender identity are the Royal College of Nursing, which cited it as an “alternative” alongside terms such as “boygirl”, “girlboy” or “gender queer”.

The controversy follows the emergence of the nullo cult, whose members believe in “gender nullification”. Seven men between the ages of 30 and 60, were arrested in north London in February under suspicion of carrying out illegal castrations and streaming the operations online.

They are said to have carried out amputations in a basement flat in Finsbury Park and filmed the procedures for a pay-per-view channel promoted on Twitter.

The group’s leader, who was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, was said to call himself the Eunuch Maker.
