I actually saw one on the side of the road in Springfield MO, I guess they were testing it and it broke down. That was like 3 or more years ago though.

Meta’s VR platform Horizon is too buggy and employees aren’t using it enough, says exec

Meta’s VR social network Horizon Worlds — the company’s flagship “metaverse” app — is suffering from too many quality issues and even the team building it isn’t using it very much, according to internal memos obtained by The Verge.

Simply put, for an experience to become delightful and retentive, it must first be usable and well crafted.”

“Why don’t we love the product we’ve built so much that we use it all the time?”

Everyone in this organization should make it their mission to fall in love with Horizon Worlds.

He went on to call out specific issues with Horizon, writing that “our onboarding experience is confusing and frustrating for users” and that the team needed to “introduce new users to top-notch worlds that will ensure their first visit is a success.”

We are working on a product that has not found product market fit.

I haven't transitioned on paper yet, but may if it proves useful.

Several robotics companies, including Boston Dynamics, are pledging not to support the weaponization of their products and are calling for others in the industry to do the same, according to a letter shared first with Axios.

Why it matters: Robots, like drones before them, have a wide range of peaceful and even life-saving uses, but can be turned into war-fighting machines, too.

Details: The open letter highlights the erosion of consumer trust in robots as among the reasons not to allow them to be used as weapons.

"We believe that adding weapons to robots that are remotely or autonomously operated, widely available to the public, and capable of navigating to previously inaccessible locations where people live and work, raises new risks of harm and serious ethical issues," the companies said in the letter.

The companies pledged not to add weapons technology themselves or to support others doing so. And "when possible" they said they will review customers' plans in hopes of avoiding those who would turn the robots into weapons, in addition to exploring technical features that could prevent such use.

In addition to Boston Dynamics, five other firms signed on to the commitment: Agility Robotics, ANYbotics, Clearpath Robotics, Open Robotics and Unitree Robotics.

What they're saying: Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter said, in an e-mailed statement: "We are concerned about recent increases in makeshift efforts by individuals attempting to weaponize commercially available robots... For this technology to be broadly accepted throughout society, the public needs to know they can trust it. And that means we need policy that prohibits bad actors from misusing it."

Intel releases half finished GPU

Intel Arc has been quite a red herring as of late; It was supposed to launch Q1 this year, got delayed to Q2 and has only recently got an official release date... which just so happens to be the same day that the arguably more exciting RTX 40 series cards from Nvidia come out. Regardless, Intel's first second attempt at dedicated graphics card has been fraught with nothing but hardship judging by the supposed silicon level issues the Alchemist architecture (and supposedly also Battlemage, too) has, as well as the fact that there were rumors of Arc straight up being cancelled. Alas, the multi-billion corporation has decided to release the product that they have poured multiple billion dollars into and... it's ok.

The Arc a770 and a750 are mid range graphics cards that compete in price and performance with the RTX 3060, and to that end, the intel cards are in fact roughly as performant as aformentioned Nvidia card whilst also costing slightly less money. Just, uh, pretend that AMD doesn't exist is all.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/16841351672892022.webp

The only issue however, is the fact that Arc isn't quite ready, with it's lack of native DX9 and gimped DX11 support being quite glaring. Of course, it's intel's first second shot at this so it is to be expected that their hardware and drivers aren't going to have the maturity of products that have decades of development and fine tuning behind them, BUT, come on, man.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/16841351680104342.webp

And on the topic of drivers, they're in a rough state, apparently, lacking basic features such as fan control as well as refusing to output an image on certain monitors. Ouch.

These cards release soon so there is almost no chance that any of these major issues will be fixed by the time consumers can get their hands on them. Early access hardware, what a world we live in ey?

Exclusive: Apollo, Sixth Street no longer in talks to finance Twitter deal, sources say

Apollo Global Management Inc (APO.N) and Sixth Street, which were looking to provide financing to Elon Musk earlier this year for his proposed buyout of Twitter Inc (TWTR.N), are no longer in talks with the billionaire entrepreneur, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Twitter and Musk did not immediately respond to request for comment, while Apollo and Sixth Street declined to comment.

Earlier in the year, Apollo was also considering ways it could provide financing to a deal, sources previously told Reuters.

Those talks have ended, according to the sources familiar with the matter on Wednesday.

Generative modeling has made tremendous progress, especially in recent text-to-image models. Imagen Video is another step forward in generative modelling capabilities, advancing text-to-video AI systems. Video generative models can be used to positively impact society, for example by amplifying and augmenting human creativity. However, these generative models may also be misused, for example to generate fake, hateful, explicit or harmful content. We have taken multiple steps to minimize these concerns, for example in internal trials, we apply input text prompt filtering, and output video content filtering. However, there are several important safety and ethical challenges remaining. Imagen Video and its frozen T5-XXL text encoder were trained on problematic data. While our internal testing suggest much of explicit and violent content can be filtered out, there still exists social biases and stereotypes which are challenging to detect and filter. We have decided not to release the Imagen Video model or its source code until these concerns are mitigated.

Sick of data leaks, Indonesians are siding with a hacker who exposed 1.3 billion SIM card details

On August 31, a user named Bjorka posted an entry on a little-known site called Breached Forums, with the bland title: “Indonesia SIM Card (Phone Number) Registration 1.3 Billion.”

Indonesians’ data is exposed at such a rate that citizens jokingly call it an “open-source country.”

The following year, a hacker breached the databases of BPJS Kesehatan, the country’s healthcare and social security agency, revealing national ID numbers and more for 279 million people, some of whom are deceased.

Hire a consultant to investigate what data has been breached, what’s the root cause, and what’s the next step,” said Mulyadi, who has also been frustrated by spam sent to his private number. “

As a result, when a leak occurs, it’s not always clear where the breach originated: from one of the government agencies, or the companies themselves.

“The challenge is how strong this institution’s authority will be, [which] will entirely depend on the president’s good faith,” Djafar added.

Splunk Files Intellectual Property Lawsuit Against Cribl

Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLK), the data platform leader for security and observability, today announced that it filed a lawsuit against Cribl in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, alleging patent infringement, copyright infringement, unfair competition, and other claims. The complaint alleges that Cribl infringes numerous Splunk copyrights and patents, and has unlawfully misappropriated Splunk source code and confidential materials.

Splunk’s complaint alleges that Clint Sharp, CEO and Co-founder of Cribl, founded Cribl using code that he took from Splunk when he was a Splunk employee without permission or a license to do so. Splunk further alleges that Cribl and Mr. Sharp encouraged Splunk employees, who they recruited to Cribl, to misappropriate confidential technical and business documents from Splunk. Moreover, Splunk alleges that since then, Cribl has developed and marketed its software by, among other things, making unlicensed copies of Splunk’s copyrighted software, and is willfully infringing numerous patents awarded to Splunk by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

According to the complaint, Cribl is “a business built on the back of Splunk’s labor and intellectual property, without license and without regard for ethics, the rights of others, or the law.” The complaint explains further that unfortunately Cribl’s actions left Splunk no choice but to file this lawsuit. While Splunk is disappointed that Cribl’s behavior and wrongdoing have forced it to take this action, Splunk is confident the judicial process will determine that Cribl has infringed and misappropriated Splunk’s intellectual property for Cribl’s own benefit. This case is about Cribl’s misconduct. Splunk is not changing how it works with customers and partners, and looks forward to continuing to help them leverage Splunk to drive great insights and effective results.

I tried neeva once and they seemed cool.

Ex-Google ad boss builds tracker-free search engine

An advert- and tracker-free search engine launches in the UK, France and Germany on Thursday.

Neeva has 600,000 users in the US, where it launched last year.

Creator Sridhar Ramaswamy, who worked at Google for 16 years and ran its ad business, told BBC News the technology sector had become "exploitative" of people's data, something he no longer wanted to be a part of.

Trying out Neeva Search the word "migraine" on both Google and Neeva, and the first page of the results are fairly similar - links to news articles and factual information.

But while Google follows with a map, social-media feeds and links to used-car dealers, Neeva sticks with different BMW official pages.

"The ultimate goal is to offer an alternative for the consumer base who are worried about their privacy, who don't want Google hoovering up their data and targeting ads based on their search history".

Intel Laptop Users Should Avoid Linux 5.19.12 To Avoid Potentially Damaging The Display

Intel laptop users running Linux are being advised to avoid running the latest Linux 5.19.12 stable kernel point release as it can potentially damage your display.

Intel Linux kernel engineer Ville Syrjäl posted today on the kernel mailing list: After looking at some logs we do end up with potentially bogus panel power sequencing delays, which may harm the LCD panel.

Greg, I recommend immediate revert of this stuff, and new stable release ASAP.

Greg Kroah-Hartman has immediately released Linux 5.19.13 with the problematic Intel graphics driver patches reverted.

If you do not have this problem with 5.19.12, there is no need to upgrade."

Instagram to increase ad load as Meta fights revenue decline

Following another quarter that saw marketers pull back on their ad spending, Meta today announced it’s increasing its ad load on Instagram with the launch of two new ad slots.

Called “post-loop” ads, these 4- to 10-second skippable ads and standalone video ads will play after a Reel has ended.

In addition, the company is introducing new Instagram ad placements as a way to increase the surface for ads as it struggles to monetize its TikTok competitor, Reels.

Historically, Instagram had only placed ads on Explore within the Explore feed — that is, when a person taps on a post and scrolls.

The company said it saw third-quarter revenue potentially declining between 2% and 11% year-over-year to somewhere in the range of $26 billion to $28.5 billion.

Instagram is also launching the open beta for AR ads in Feeds and Stories, a format that was previously announced, and rolling out a song library with free music advertisers can use in their Reels ads.
