The best AI-generated art is the surreal kind. Bots can generate surreal, dreamlike text and imagery that has a beauty all its own, in ways that no human being could ever create.

I used to absolutely love the bots on Twitter that posted randomly-generated lines of surreal text, like this one and this one. Sadly, however, the really cool Twitter bots seem to have largely disappeared and been replaced by porn bots and cryptocurrency bots. :marseyitsover:

Yeah early neural networking programs and learning algorithms are an alien beauty. You can run them yourself, these days. They're still out there.

I used a modern GPT program to enhance searches for those old, surreal videos, and found this gem a bit back. https://rdrama.net/h/slackernews/post/276825/aicels-remember-your-roots

I miss those old Google Deepdream images where it was trained on a specific object and would transform images where it thought it detected those objects.

There's still good AI art out there that humans can't create, like all those images that look normal but where all the objects form into a recognizable Happy Merchant silhouette, etc

Eh that's not really true. We've done like that stuff for ages. Dali's work is full of that kind of idea.

I'm glad someone else feels this way. All the progress in AI has made it more boring and it's in this kinda useless middle-ground right now. I don't even like the porn.

It's a problem of concepts and composition, which existed in digital art way before the first SD model was released.

Ironically the data that's being "stolen" and fed into the newer models serves to limit their potential since that data is mostly mediocre art made by amateurs.

that's why people need to dream more, there is lots of stuff like that in dreams. a woman once told me while we were looking at some sort of interior mural, with wave-curved bathroom tile walls and parallel lines drawn across them(there were many people, some sort of tourist attraction) that "a stupid person fills in the lines, a stupider person comes along and makes the lines thinner." made sense to me at the time, made sense when i woke up, after 5 minutes though it didn't make sense anymore.

It takes a lot of effort just because it's funny but take an rdrama comment post or a title and just post an image that was generated from it.

>I dug this hole

You didn't dig that hole! A Caterpillar 336 did! You exerted no effort. A real hole takes time. Now look at Rodney's hole: he used a shovel. Rodney's hole took effort.

>While digging the hole took no time, I still had to rent the Caterpillar, and determine the size of my hole, and where to dig.

Sure, but Rodney's passionate about holes. Your hole has no soul. It's nothing like the holes of yore: holes we dug with trowels, knives, spoons; holes we dug with our hands. Dirty-fingernail holes. Holes you think back on, and think: god, digging that hole was difficult. Why did I dig that hole? Why am I always digging holes? Because I must.

>My hole is to regulation: I can dig a thousand of these holes now, and I never have to get dirty.

But getting dirty is the point of digging holes! If you're not dripping sweat, covered in dirt and three feet below the earth, can you really call it a hole?

>It's just a hole like any other hole. I just didn't have to work at it.

I liked this hole before I found out it's an unnatural hole; now I wouldn't even shit in that hole. You should be ashamed.

When you think about it, the average zoomer who doesn't even own a sharpened knife is actually a great chef because they can make high quality food in a fraction of the time with no mess by writing prompts in uber eats.

I'm not saying you're an artist if you're generating slop; but if someone's analyzing pixels, and still has to kinda guess if something is AI or not, then you're certainly generating some shit that LOOKS like an artist may have made it.

And then if you ARE an artist generating slop, and then editing it to be indistinguishable from real from-sketch art, then are you just another prompter, or are you simply saving time?

I guess to use your example: is a pie worse simply because your mom didn't make it herself, and lied that she did? What about if she made the whole pie, but bought the pie crust? If she made the whole thing, but didn't grow the strawberries herself, is she sorta lying about having made it from scratch? If she used the sun to grow the berries, and not the light of her smile, then isn't she just a lying-c*nt whore pieforger still?

The reaction against AI art is the collective techsperg tendency towards the "donut steel" mentality, except this time it's collectivized so they can feel like they've been stolen from with 0 evidence of any actual theft. Ignoring the fact that most art these types consume is extremely derivative(often stylistic imitations, traces, and even photobashes) slop to begin with, the actual AI art that's being created isn't super high quality to begin with. Most of the examples of decent AI art involved several steps of refinement with manual photoshopping afterwards, which is more effort than what the people complaining about AI art put in anyways.

All the fanart and coomer commission artists that were writing screeds about AI ending cultural progress are still doing fine. The paypigs are still there. The majority of the art, both human and AI created, is still bad. Life is continuing on as normal.

I mean there's that old video essay (an actual essay not just some r-slur talking about games he played when he was 8) Everything is a Remix. I don't know how people don't see how AI is doing the same thing that we did. Consuming art and culture and spitting it out in a new form. As said before, good artists copy while great artists steal.

Another thing that bothers me is that the people who complain the most about AI are the r-slurs that create the most derivative garbage that is entirely made up of existing IPs. No, you making anime fan art isn't "sovlful" in fact it's actual copyright infringement.
