Can someone explain to me the appeal of this film? I saw it with friends at the cinema back when it came out, because it was hyped as frick. I found it excruciating to watch.
I think it was a musical which explains a big chunk of why I hated it, but I don't recall the story being that engaging either.
Do you have to be a huge anime fan to like this film? I don't watch anime, unless you consider Studio Ghibli anime (which I don't, and nor does Miyazaki, incidentally), but I have read manga (Dragon Ball, Ranma 1/2, a lot of stuff by Katsuhiro Otomo, Osamu Tezuka, Junji Ito, Kazuo Umezu, Hideshi Hino and Nagabe) so Japanese storytelling isn't alien to me.
I just don't get it.

I mean, I wanna watch it, but I dont think its tranime. It literally uses extreme double switch (boy to girl, big city Tokyo life to small inaka town so tiny it sits in an extinct volcano crater) as a metaphor for like....no matter where you go, you'll still be you. True anime, in general seems to peddle the same group of tropes and characters over and over. There's some variation and occasional anime producers (often the ones who are considered not to be 'respectful to the audience') try subversion but it's generally the same thing over and over.
This is why it appeals to emotionally stunted and intellectually limited people.
