I watched through the entirety of Evangelion and couldn't figure out the appeal.

Tbh me neither, it was just average, Misato is an absolutely !builtfor !BBC ricebunny, but other than that, it was an average anime to that just so happens to have invented and/or popularized a lot of tired tropes that are now common and/or outdated, in my neurodivergent opinion, Evangelion became successful because it is the 90s anime equivalent of Assassin's Creed Valhalla - it was highly successful because it was released in right place in the right time, if it was released at a later date it would not have had the same success.

It was released in Japan in 1995 and internationally in the late 90s, the era where West was growing more interested about anime ("Japanimation") and Japanese media and products (i.e. the cultural peak of Pokémon, Nintendo, Ninjas in pop culture, Jap car brands and companies becoming omnipresent in the West, etc.), and when waifushittery and self-insert romance slop started to dominate anime/nerd/NEET circles in Japan, given the Japanese economic bubble and economic crisis, a lot of Jap otakus who were already social pariahs before, were now gaining less money, or were unemployed, or were otherwise nihilistic and with no future direction in life to look up to.

It also had a normie-friendly colorful shounen artstyle, but at the same time handled mature topics, it was just the perfect "first anime" for normies to watch and get into, and also perfect for the native Jap Hikikomoricels to self-insert themselves as the unattractive Asian manlet suddenly getting a harem of waifus because.... because he can okay? :soyjakferal:

But it is very useful to mention that the popularity of the NGE waifu characters and its character designs outshines the anime itself, I recall that the vast majority of all profits that NGE ever received was through pachinko and merch sales :marseynooticeglow: :marseymisatolewd1: :marseycoomer2: !weebs !anime

When NGE hit North America anime was still called japanimation and consisted of Astro Boy, Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, and Ninja Scroll.

NGE by comparison was leaps and bounds ahead in terms of animation, story, and voice acting.

EFFORTPOST ALERT:

:#hesrightyouknow::#hesrightyouknow::#hesrightyouknow: Ninja Scroll, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and NGE were the first mature-oriented Japanese anime that reached a modicum of success and popularity in the West, before that, the Westoids still had that notion that cartoons are stuff only for kids, did not cared for Japanese animation, and had a very limited concept of "adult animation" that was not political satire, "experimental art" BS, or grimdark/erotic slop.

And when I mean places outside of Japan in general, I am not just talking about North America, Evangelion was also a huge success in Latinx America of course, so here are some fun facts about the !macacos dub of NGE:

1. The dub actually gave the characters voice actors who were of their exact ages!, Asuka was voiced by a girl who was actually 14, and Rei and Shinji were voiced by 15 year olds respectively! :marseycop: :marseypedo: :marseycop2:

2. .....And til this very day in re-dubs, movies, and other specials, the three protagonists have been getting voiced by the exact same voice actors who are now in their 40s! :marseydarkxd:

3. Shinji is voiced by Fábio Lucindo, who also voices Ash Ketchum, Kuririn, Ichigo, Chopper, Detective Conan, Kiba, Michael Cera, Zac Efron, Zoldyck, Stingy in Lazy Town, and Arnold in Hey Arnold! :gigachad2:

4. Asuka is voiced by Fernanda Bullara, who also voices Caillou (:marseyxdorbit:), Brie Larson, Ramona Flowers, Lara Croft, Ino in Naruto, and Jinx in League :jinxthinkerhesright:

5. Rei is voiced by Priscilla Concepcion, who also voices Rogue in X-Men 97, Temari in Naruto, Jade from Jackie Chan Adventures, and Hillary Duff :marseypikachu2:

6. The dub was directed by Fábio Moura, the voice actor of Ikari who has also been voicing him til this very day! :marseyboomer:

7. Aoba, Ibuki, Nagisa, and Toji have also been voiced by the same actors since 1999, but out of these, only Yuri Chesman, the voice of Nagisa was also aged 14 when he voiced him, he is now the voice of Pim in Smiling Friends, Saitama, Gaara, Gon in HxH, Lupin III, Josuke, Gohan in some episodes, and Chris Griffin :marseyfamily:

8. For some reason the Brapzilians hated Misa:marseytrain2: or they kept hiring rowdy foids, and so she has always received a new voice actress on every re-release and installment https://preview.redd.it/dr-kleiner-noooo-v0-1jf2mgu3yi3a1.png?width=1044&format=png&auto=webp&s=7fb01258a5d7f47f2f334c4a35b3d74cf9337d0c

9. The newest 2019 dub adds a ton of profanity that was not present in the previous dubs, they genuinely wanted to make NGE to be as "adult" and edgy as possible on the most recent re-release, probably because they know that NGE fans in 2019 are all terminally online neurodivergent virgin NEETs in their 30s and not teenagers anymore :marseyshrug:

10. When you look up the Brazpilian Rei, Shinji and Asuka in real life doe.... :marseycatgirl2: :marseycatgirl4: :marseycatgirl: :to: :brazilmutt: :chudbrasileiro: :brazilaryan: :marseydarkxd:

Also the Shinji in this pic is the same guy from the infamous "Boner Robin" prehistoric meme, the Boner Robin pic was coincidentally taken at some comic/anime con on September 2001! :bruh: (not making this shit up, this is true, but I am not sure if it was before or after 9/11, but very likely before, since after the attacks, pretty much all cons and social events were cancelled or postponed)

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/ee/cb/1d/eecb1d81869ae977f9a178ceb7e49e98.jpg https://i.imgur.com/pfQ6XAb.jpeg !commenters !latinx !effortposters !anime !weebs

And not being content with being an early internet meme and the peak example of the "skinny, short, and scrawny weeaboo nerd" stereotype, Boner Robin quintupled the frick down in his lolcow saga, and tried to start a career in the porn industry :marseydarkxd: (but not as a porn actor though :chuditsover:), making his anime con neurodivergent and his porn connoisseur personas do a fusion dance, he ran a laughably bad and hilariously r-slurred cosplay porn site in the mid-2000s and expected to gain money from it, and as a result he was relentlessly bullied and made fun of in both the cosplay and porno communities, even the weirdos made fun of this weirdo. :marseyxdorbit:

Boner Robin is like if YandereDev tried to become a porn film director instead of a video game dev, but that is a schizopost for another time :marseyschizowave:

Were the original 80s OVAs successful in the West?, I recall that it was only when BC2040 came out in 2000 that it was a hit.

I guess, but I don't know why you would watch it nowaday when you have much more deep and well structured anime like Full Metal Alchemist 2003 (for the action side), or Monster (for the thriller and drama side)

Maybe the mechs, but isn't Gundam also better then it in every department if thats the case lol

I recall that the vast majority of all profits that NGE ever received was through Gacha and merch sales

I think that's true for most anime, outside the big films they don't make massive amounts of profit. They're used to drive sales of the manga or merch

FRICK I wrote this incorrectly, I meant Pachinko sales, not Gacha sales, I mixed the names:

https://old.reddit.com/r/evangelion/comments/8t7iix/how_much_revenue_has_the_nge_ip_generated/

$14.9 billion is the gross for the whole NGE franchise according to Wikipedia

Note that this is money from pachinko machine sales, not what people put into said machines. And, of course, precisely how much of said money goes to khara is unclear - other sources of revenue could turn out to be more profitable for them.

11.5 out of 14.9 billion from GAMBLING MACHINES? Are you KIDDING? LMFAO dude that's hilarious.

Several of Japan's top ten richest either own Pachinko machine manufacturing companies, or are tangentially related to Pachinko.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Japanese_by_net_worth ( See #7, #8 within 2015)

Also, it should tell you something that Neko Oikawa, who wrote the lyrics to Cruel Angel's Thesis (JUST THE LYRICS) makes 100 million yen a year ($900,000+) in royalties from her work on the song.

NGE created those tropes now used in modern anime. It was huge because anime used to only be for already known IPs (mainly to sell toys). It was the first anime series to be its own IP and also handle mature topics.

>a lot of tired tropes that are now common and/or outdated

Once again, those tropes are tired because Eva was as successful as it was. It fundamentally changed Anime as a medium. It's like complaining about Elves and Dwarves in LOTR.

>I recall that the vast majority of all profits that NGE ever received was through pachinko and merch sales

Even moreso then plot, mechandising is the big revolutionary part of it to anime as a medium. It made it economically viable to exploit otaku (superfans) then to rely on networks. Allowing for more weird shit.

Show is a top five anime, which says more about anime as a medium then anything else.

known for having a ton of lore not in the show.

That's Evangelion/anime in general. The amount of series that have important or cool lore hidden in BS Japan only exclusive products/events is absurd. I'm talking stage plays, audio cd dramas , japan only games, japan only exclusive cafe collaborations with collector books, or worst of all pachinko collabs with new animated scenes (naturally) exclusive only to Japan.

I love Eva and anime in general but if you're an international fan there is lore and info you literally cannot get no matter what cause screw you.

Tbh I think the fans that are really into this stuff know Japanese and thus have little interest in seeing anything translated.
