A question for Gundam chads

I’m still getting into Gundam, but so far I’ve sat through all of The Origin, The movie versions of the original, 8th MS Team, and the first season of Gundam 00.

While I get that it’s kind of the point of the series, so far I’ve noticed the Gundams are always completely overpowered relative to the antagonist’s mobile suits. Even at the end of the series when things start to equalize, the protagonists still pull out some new tech or power or whatnot to give them an edge. They seem overly dependent on technology to me, and that feels like a writing mistake. Are there Gundam shows where the good and bad mechs are fairly equalized, and its piloting skill that really makes the difference? Something with no last second powerups or sudden new weapons?

The last fight between Amuro and Char was alright, but the latter’s legless Zeong was hard to take seriously. 8th MS Team wasn’t too bad about this, but it also lacked one on one duels. 00 was almost what I wanted towards the end of season 1, but they still pulled out too many last second abilities.

After that exhaustive list of anime watched you're just now figuring out Gundam are a bunch of Mary Sues protected by plot armor?

a mary sue is a character that has the world and narrative simp for him or her, having plot armor or being powerful doesn't make them a mary sue/gary stu. an example is reva from star wars, she knows information that she has no reason to know in universe and the narrative wants you to root for her when she has unrealistic, morally dubious, and hypocritical motivations (not to mention characters like vader who are known to be strict are overly forgiving of her when they wouldn't do that with other characters, a direct character contradiction in favor of keeping reva alive). in gundam the newtypes are basically people with enhanced reflexes, physicality, and minor psychic abilities which makes them able to use mechs with unstable limit pushing technology that isn't safe for regular people, kind of like the halo spartans with mjolnir

The only reason they can use better tech is because newtypes have superhuman reflexes which allows them to use prototype technology, that's an intended world building mechanic. In War in the Pocket you see a normal human fighting with a Gundam and they do much worse against a normal Zaku pilot than someone like Amuro or Kamille. Not to mention the deal with Zeon is that they're using more industrial, limited technology and they didn't have as good resources compared to the federation especially since they're a newly made faction. Think of how if in the US a new rebel faction rose up and bought or developed a ton of military technology, the US has a more developed military and research structure so their technology would be more consistently produced with higher quality

They're all pretty much like that. Especially against mooks.

00 closes the gap by giving all of the enemies GN Tau drives which are worse than standard GN Drives, but it does force them into hit and run tactics.

G Gundam is mostly 1v1 fights between Gundams. Though it's a super robot series not a real robot series. Also if you watch it only do the dub.

Good to know. I do like the military fiction of most Gundam series, but I’ll give G a try.

I appreciated how the “bad guys” of 00 got better and better at fighting the Gundams over the course of the season. I guess it’ll have to do for my itch.

Are there other mech series with action like what I’m looking for?

I always think Macross when I hear Gundum, and then get confused when there are no Macross missiles.

The time has come for the Necromaster. The unleashing of the fourth joker's card. The arrival of The Great Milenko

I think Gundam Wing was the one everyone made AMVs using Evanescence and Linkin Park back in the early 2000s so you should watch that next.
