I think the idea there is that "pais" means "youth, child" and that would be a young servant or more likely slave, and the Romans weren't too concerned with consensual equal s*x when it came to banging their slaves, female or male. So the assumption would be "if it's a cute twink of course the master is hitting that".
But the Jewish elders and townspeople advocate for the Centurion to Jesus, saying he is a righteous man even if he is a Gentile. Unless Bardy is claiming the locals in Capernaum were just fine with gay s*x r*pe of slaves (and hey, who knows?), then they would not be likely to say "help this guy out, he's one of the good ones".
There's also the assumption that unless the Centurion was fricking this twink, he wouldn't care if a servant was sick and in need. So they would rather believe a random guy was a gay paedophile than that he might be a good person who cared about even his servants.

Modern people love to assume that this is always some sexual thing. You would think kids in their society did nothing else besides getting molested.
A lot of this goes back to the Classical Studies departments in 1800s England being dominated by guys who thought relationships between old men and boys were great and had a lot of incentive to claim the Greeks and Romans did too.
