I was working for MS on the launch of the original Xbox (did Flash ads lol) and got to go to the launch party with The Rock and Bill Gates lol.
The branding standards book from MS was 800 pages long.

a dude who I (vaguely) knew (maybe more knew of, although I went to his old apartment once) from the boston hacker BBS scene either sold gates on the idea of the xbox and got kinda written out of the story OR has tried to wrongly lay claim to credit for coming up with the xbox, I've never been sure.

Did they work at MS? Not so sure they needed inspiration to make a game console once Sony showed that an electronics company with deep pockets could dominate the market in less than 5 years. And once Sony said PS2 is a DVD player too, MS got nervous they were going to take over.

yeah he uh... I have no idea what I should and shouldn't say about BBS shit from over thirty years ago but the other really funny thing was that he convinced gates to ship windows 95 as-is with a TCP stack and then other 617 hacker scene people (wasn't a big scene) took that in uh other directions

that but also: convincing MS to ship windows with a TCP/IP stack using lanman security which was discovered to be trivially crackable by... mudge, who j allard KNEW from the boards, initiating decades of windows security chaos. there's a great (not true, but) conspiracy there if anybody wants it
