Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
One of the things I did in researching How To Get Reddit To Take Responsibility For Extremists On Platform was to research how the Reddit TOS changed over time.
When it was still directly owned by Wired / Conde Nast, the TOS explicitly banned all obscenity.
Which, of course, meant nothing.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Before Reddit was owned by Conde Nast / Wired, Huffman (u/spez) had outlined in written statements that as long as he was in charge, the site would ban Nazis.
Which, of course, meant nothing.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Free Speech Warriors pushed hard a narrative that Reddit was always (before the ban of /r/coontown) a Free Speech Haven; the truth is that even before those bans, Reddit's TOS was both effectively nonexistent and their hand in banhammering Nazis was also nonexistent, until they hit the news.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Reddit didn't ban /r/jailbait because of it hitting the news, nor because it is a legal and moral hazard, nor because of it violating any specific AUP.
It was banned because ViolentAcrez tried to hand it over to a group of people who were KiwiFarms types before there was a KiwiFarms.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
There's a lot of evidence that Reddit didn't ban /r/coontown & a handful of other subreddits in 2015 due to harassment & hate speech, but because at least one of the moderators was under federal investigation for terrorism (he was picked up a few months later, tried & sentenced)
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
I am old enough to remember that there were newsfroups and IRC channels and bulletin board systems & etc that sheltered, enabled, & connected these kinds of sociopaths long before even the year 2000.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
It wasn't so much that the sysops were more active back then; it's that they are now playing a game of legal musical chairs and hoping that eventually a political party would stop the music while they were next to a chair.
Unfortunately the GOP has declared a monopoly on chairs, now
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
The point I'm circling, here, is that it has always been bad, and the bad people have, in fact, manipulated the referees to make it even worse.
Athena Grande (@athenagrande.bsky.social):
What confuses me is why they even allow themselves to be manipulated. How hard is it to be like cool, hate speech and anything adjacent is an easy ban. Harassing other users? Ban. Why would you let Nazis and libertarians in your space

ViolentAcrez is still around? I haven't seen that name in ages.
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
Idk if he's still "around" but he was leveraging the kind of "what can I get away with" referee-working back then which a certain alleged journ*list is engaged in here, now
Rene Lafayette (@azawalli.bsky.social):
Oh. Thanks for the update. I know which alleged journ*list you're talking about.
