If you followed me for Social Media Moderation discussion, you should also follow @chadloder.bsky.social - in addition to being well versed in the issues affecting state regulation of UCHISPs & how that affects activism, they also are active in helping others in need.

The "Protocols Not Platforms" approach shows some real promise, notwithstanding gaps in the current state of tooling.

However, there are major gaps in this approach that I think remain unaddressed: 1/

In today's "Is it analog synth or is it Fairlight", the decaying sproing vibrato in the synth notes of InSoc's "Pure Energy"

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

It is a drum pad, which makes it almost certainly a sample. And mmmaybe not Fairlight

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Liner notes include an Akai S900 sampler in the instrumentation, soooo —

I'm just trying to figure out if this is a FM synth'd wave or a sample of a ruler held to a tabletop & plucked

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

Seems like it was a sample.

I have lived a half century on this Earth. My earliest memories of technology were of B&W TVs, radio receivers the size of cedar chests, mechanical typewriters & computers that filled a room & required their own A/C units.

The device I hold now could run an entire multinational corporation in 1975.

Jeff Eaton (@eaton.fyi):

Late Gen-Xers/early Millennials were the weird cohort that experienced the emergence of modern digital culture but witnessed the world before it.

It was a 15 year transition from "a modem is a thing hacker matthew broderick uses to start a nuclear war" to the launch of Napster and Livejournal.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

In 1st grade I was expected to know cursive longhand. Again, in 3rd grade, in 1983.

I remember the first time I used the Internet, thru a FIDOnet relay, to send an electronic mail from a dial-up BBS to someone. It used bang paths.

My freshman month in Uni was September 1993.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

One of my CS professors firmly believed that the future of computing science was in humans writing algorithms as daemons in machine code, for the 8086 platform

Decades ago, on Slashdot or Livejournal, can't recall which board exactly, I opined that "There's nothing stopping the government of the USA from becoming fascist, or big-C Communist, or w/ever, if that's the will of the voters."

Off-hand, dismissively. In the sense of 'it can't happen'

If you want a frustratingly nuanced take, which I assume is why at least some of you who aren't morons follow me, something can be both unintentional and a genuine statement of belief.

Musk does pretty obviously have both extremely bad opinions and impulse control problems.

RNS (@rns.org):

"I'm skeptical it was on purpose," said Jared Holt, a senior research analyst at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, which tracks online hate. "It would be an act of self-sabotage that wouldn't really make much sense at all."

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

>an act of self-sabotage

He has more money than any other individual on the planet and most orgs besides. His faction has won control of the USA. He controls an enormous comms platform that has captured as many 419's as possible. Whether it is self-sabotage remains to be seen.

Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):

In a kind, reasonable, functional world, so much he's done would be The End of It

This isn't that world, and he's got its number
