Ed Zitron (@edzitron.com):
drives me completely insane that the new york times and most major media entities can't link to court filings they're discussing. Is there a reason?
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
It might be an active choice; there's been studies done showing a lot of people don't look at the primary cited sources, that some of them trust a piece less when it cites sources (irony, irony) …
Ruth keady (@ruviewer.bsky.social):
Hmmmm… I'm not sure we should be tailoring our news stories to suit people who are nervous about facts
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
The psych theory behind explaining it is that people want to trust the word of the reporter instead of trusting a scientist / researcher / journal they didn't previously know. That the reporter's narrative should stand on its own.
Which … is a naive attitude, but exists nevertheless
Ruth keady (@ruviewer.bsky.social):
My MAGA sister-in-law told me a couple of years ago "I don't trust fact checkers."
Ms. Penny Oaken, SkyWitch (@skywitches.net):
I had a Fox News watching great aunt who simultaneously distrusted factcheckers and admonished me to "do your own research". She resisted seat belt laws until the 2000's, too.
But some very "un-political" people will delegate to reporters. They want someone to think for them.
