I personally put my efforts towards my local community and have had some reservations if overseas charity is a beneficial thing to local economies or not.
It seems to undermine local institutions as well as having corruption issues. Not sure if it actually helps people in the long run.

I have family that does missionary work. A family member got stuck in Africa when some payments to the local government werent enough. They openly pay to be there doing the work. Many locals see missionaries as free handouts. The locals wouldnt let them in otherwise.

My take is its bad. It seems like a dont feed the animals situation. For example they pack suit cases of peanut butter for Haiti to maximize calories. Feeding people a ton of peanut butter doesnt sound like much of a plan to me.

I'm definitely not a christian, but it seems a poor idea to try and utilitarianism your way out of the inherent moral goodness of charity. On the object level though, charity does seem to be counterproductive in many ways, so I guess I'd agree with you there.

It seems to be very important when you have functional institutions, if only for identifying weak links in current systems, but I'm talking about countries without a robust food supply where just air dropping free food prevents the establishment of local markets.
Emergency aid is good and helping people who are having a rough time is good but I'm not sure making entire countries reliant on aid is good.
