I can understand the idea of servants. I cant fathom the idea of thinking that I could ever afford a servant. Even the upper middle class here might only have a Mexican cleaning lady come once a week. A live in servant here is so out of reach for the average American that it seems wasteful and ridiculous. Why pay someone for what I can do myself?

We had a live-in to take care of my lil brother when he was a baby. It used to be a bit more common till a decade ago. Nowadays, it's just cleaning and cooking for an hour and fricking off.

live in help is cheaper because you save on housing costs and commuting time. there
just aren't as many people willing 
to do that type of work in developing countries so they tend to hire part time help (mexican yard workers). regulations are also tighter and enforced better.
