Those who eat cows are a pretty good proxy for the fifth column outgroup though, given the fact its taboo in literally 100% of the native stock across religions, communities, regions.
And American political discourse at peak of prez elections centered for weeks on refugees eating pets lol. This shouldn't seem too alien. Cows aren't something they saw in PETA ads or driving through countryside for most Hindus, they're pets. An avg household will have 2 or 3.

But you're missing that it's not just cats and dogs, but all pets in the USA. And none of the dogmeat outrage ever affect the Chinese anyways, it's irrelevant.
Meanwhile you don't see Sexy Indian dudes crying about muh chickens or start vigilante squads to save other animals. You don't even have Sexy Indian dudes acting like this over their actual pets.

But cows are the avg Indian's actual pet. They all have names, multiple members of the family care for them. Most live out their lives with one family, even after they can't be milked I won't say standard of care doesn't drop in the poorer ones esp but they mostly aren't abandoned/sold to butchers despite fact that they do cost a fair bit. Very few have dogs/cats in comparison, majority of those are strays surviving off waste and the like.
Its not extinct but consumption of their waste isn't really common either, its on the fringes and invokes revulsion in most Hindus. It'll probably die out entirely with older gens.
Its not wasting time this is training, securing funding and volunteers. Its not like riots are particularly common and these men are mostly the violent criminal type so you can't exactly drill them like a militia. But rather than them forming biker gangs and robbing innocent people I'm fine with them hunting down muslim smugglers as police looks the other way.
