My 7th grade English teacher was a Pakistani-American lady and that year for a creative writing assignment I submitted a story about two homeless men engaging in hand to hand combat to the death over a sandwich. She praised the quality of my prose and thought I was engaging in social commentary (I just wanted to write about violence
) and was pushing me to submit it to some competition (?).
She later married the vice principal and became the dean of a liberal arts college.
Very nice human being all around.
