In both cases the person is experiencing harsh reality. The woman experiencing the wall is finding out that she was never special or awesome and she was just coasting off being young and pretty, and now is facing bleak reality without that cushion and recoiling from it. The man who's had a bad relationship is discovering that all his fantasies about a loving woman were nonsense and that women are basically wretched ghouls but he's cursed by god to sexually desire them.
