Fashion and what seems to be a very laid-back, orderly city. Haven't been to Rio/Brazil but my impression is that it's way more teeming and rowdy now? Respect your progress against the
problem though

The city grew massively post 1950s (1.7 million inhabitants in 1940 to over 5 million on 1980, that's city proper not metro area), many poor laborers from the Northeast moved there in search for jobs, that's how the favelas expanded.
As for crime, it skyrocketed in the 1980s after the Military Regime ended.
