Today we will define the nuclear weapon we are going to build based around the requirements for the intended target, which will define the needed explosive yield, its overall mass, and hence the delivery platform (missile, air launch, sea launch).

The two devices used over Japan were the Fat Man implosion-type device and the Little Boy gun-type device.
The implosion type device relies on rapidly compressing a hollow shell of fissile material with standard explosives until the density arrives to a point where neutron emissions can self-perpetuate a chain reaction. The yield can be doubled or tripled by filling the evacuated space with fusion fuel prior to detonation for allowing more a complete fission reaction. The dimensions and mass of the device scale with the availability of higher grade explosives and detonation systems. It requires extreme precision in the machining and tooling of the shape of the charge.
The Little Boy gun-type device is an easy win. Instead of imploding a sphere or spheroid into a dense area, a hollow cylinder of fissile material lies at one end of the device and a corresponding piece lies at the other. The smaller piece is fired into the hollow area, causing the fission reaction.
Both emit x-rays allowing for ignition of a secondary fusion device.
