Yemen is so fricking interesting, it seems like just a no-mans-land that superpowers use as a weapons testing ground. I remember going with it out of spite for the “choose a country and make a tri-fold board about it” project everyone has to do around 5th grade but then having a lot of fun with it because their national bird may as well be an RPG rocket.

Short answer is this separation is not new. South Yemen and the YAR were a Cold War thing with almost the exact borders. I'm pretty sure Egypt even intervened to keep the YAR intact during the 60's to the tune of tens of thousands of soliders.

I hate this channel, the topics are interesting but half the videos are looking at one single picture of a map and the camera zooming and orbiting randomly so it seems like something is happening.

Could be a podcast, and everybody knows podcasts are for bottoms.
