That Cambridge definition comes off so slanted that I've got to wonder if the term has been "redefined" in recent years.

At its core it is simply someone who often^ takes part in controversies. I took at look at recent usages, and most of them are from left-leaning sources like The Guardian who put the spin you see in the Cambridge definition.

^ and arguably "likes to take part in controversies", although I don't even think this is a prerequisite, but is usually associated with it.

Edit: I was curious on the etymology and during that search found a book from 1911 titled "Jesus as a Controversialist". The actual origin itself is from the mid 17th century and references (I think) some Protestant ministers.

So a contrarian?

A contrarian isn't necessarily motivated by wanting to cause anger or controversy.

The tale of history forms a very strong bulwark against the stream of time, and to some extent checks its irresistible flow, and, of all things done in it, as many as history has taken over, it secures and binds together, and does not allow them to slip away into the abyss of oblivion.
