:#marseyhesright:

The Roman Empire is probably the most whitewashed in history. They were way more brutal and genocidal than the Bongs.

For all of the :soyjakwow: by the Romanboos, it was miles better to be a peasant in 13th century England than a slave or a provincial living under Roman dominion during the heyday of the Empire.

No way :marseydisagree: Rome was egalitarian by ancient standards (Not by modern standards lol)

A Roman commoner of the Empire could make money or rise through the ranks of the army. The former was made possible by all the imperial trade routes. The latter could get you war booty and a pension. It got to the point where the distinction between patrician and plebeian effectively ceased to matter. Many wealthy people could be of plebeian or outright foreign descent. You could be a random Berber born in Algeria, join the army, and retire with a plot of land to your name in Britain (Based off a real story but I forgot the guy's name) Descendants of literal barbarians eventually became Emperors

Britain was obsessed with social class and there was little in the way of an economic ladder to climb. They became obsessed with race too. Could you imagine an Indian or Egyptian or Belizean ever becoming Prime Minister?

No I would pick Rome. Sure the Romans sometimes had harsh punitive actions, but the English never did? :marseyjerkoffsmile:

Yes, but 99.9% of the commoners died as commoners, or even worse, as slaves. Life expectancy in the Roman Empire was worse than during the medieval period, Rome wasn't an urban Empire, 90% of the population was rural and both the rural and urban lives sucked, Rome itself was more like a giant human henhouse than some bright marble city. Yes, it had larger cities but most people were either peasants or slaves. The social mobility in Rome also depended on the period, it became more flexible during the 3rd century crisis when the equites took control, but before that all emperors belonged to the senatorial class, and the late Republic was just as classist as 19th century Britain.

I'm realizing an exact comparison is impossible unless we specify time periods lol. If offered the choice between Rome or 19th century Britain for example I would definitely pick the latter.

There are definitely situations where Romans had it better. Like, even if we look at slaves, or rather especially if we look at slaves, Roman slavery could be better. There were many types of slaves and some performed surprisingly white collar work. Accountants, scribes, and teachers could be enslaved. Gladiators are an extreme example of slave "social mobility" because they could become adored athletes and win their freedom. Some famous gladiators were even given awards including pensions and land.

Meanwhile an example of a British slave would universally be a cash crop plantation laborer in a colony. I mean, if a slave in a Roman province counts as a Roman slave, than all the black slaves in the American south before the Revolution count as British slaves right? British slavery was racial too. If some Gaulish slave was freed and started a family, you couldn't look at his grandchildren and know they were descended from a freedman. But in the Anglosphere, a :marseyblack: was always "just a neighbor" regardless of anything he did.

Perhaps direct comparisons like this are pointless because you can find successful and unlucky people from any two civilizations, but I'll still stick up for Rome and recognize what was ideal about it :marseyhmmhips:

That's why I picked 13th century England (before the plague and after the Magna Carta), instead of the chaotic Anglo Saxon England. An even better one would have been post plague England, which is when the peasants got more leverage and an expansion of rights.

Yes, but those were usually educated Greek slaves, most of the slaves were field or mining slaves living in dantesque conditions similar to Caribbean slaves or maybe worse.

I agree in thai, post-renaissance Euros became slowly race obsessed with every century that passed, especially the Anglos. Before the 1960s if you were a BIPOC or a sexy Indian dude then you had zero chances to raise your social position in Britain and the entire anglosphere.

At most you could be part of the "black elite" which were a few wealthy blacks who ran businesses which offered products to other basketballs.

Somehow Slopflix prefers to invent black dukes and earls instead of the former.
