To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand John Oliver. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of political science most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also John's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike John Oliver truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in John's existencial catchphrase "You are the worst," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as John's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a John Oliver tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
I still think he had some merit to begin with as he covered a few topics that really deserved more attention, like civil asset forfeiture. But between getting more mainstream and Trump, the sanctimonious clapter took over.

It was really Trump. He was the only talking head who resisted acknowledging Trump until he was about to get elected, which was pretty impressive. Then when he reversed his position and started drumpfing it just got really bad.

If you take politics seriously, you're an r-slur, no matter how high your IQ.
I have never met a person who took politics seriously that I'd trust near children, let alone be allowed to run important organisations.
I say this, btw, as a person who read a daily newspaper for fifteen years, before finally growing up.
I will reluctantly concede that being involved in LOCAL politics has SOME value, but you're still better off spending an hour a day on World in Data, or Wikipedia from a decade ago, than paying attention to politics.
