The judge’s decision means Holmes, 39, will have to surrender to authorities April 27 to start the more than 11-year prison sentence that Davila imposed in November.

Why would she not just leave the country? The "you must surrender on X date" thing is wild to me.

all her assets and family are in the US?

also, all of the countries in green will extradite you (and a lot of the gray ones might) which doesn't leave you many options!

She should have embezzled some money there beforehand or stocked up on liquid assets.

In 2021, the UAE began to offer more citizenship opportunities for foreigners.

The goal is to attract investors, healthcare professionals, scientists, and exceptional talents, improving the state's economy.

Those investing in property can obtain

UAE citizenship by exceptional merit and keep their first passport. A Property Investor Residence Visa, which allows investors to reside and run businesses in the UAE, optimise taxes, and access other benefits, can be the first step to a second passport.

I looked up their extradition laws and there was a site talking about how they do their best to extradite all criminals except for:

Article 9 of the Extradition Law lays down the conditions or circumstances when an extradition request may not be granted, as follows:

UAE CITIZEN: If the person requested for extradition is a UAE national (Citizen of UAE).

The little detail they glossed over is that if they’re a citizen they tell the requesting nation to go frick themselves

If you’re a rich person, might as well get citizenship and maintain a base there, hop on that private jet if things get hairy

There's a reason Ashraf Ghani fled there with his stolen money lol. I thought there'd be some outrage over something that blatant but nope everyone just took it lying down. The cute twink afghans who cry about muh reserves being seized don't even bring him up kek.

Idk, France always refused to extradite Roman Polanski but maybe that's a privilege reserved for libertarians.

That’s apparently because he’s a citizen and France didn’t agree with the judge, or I don’t know. I want to say a lot of countries won’t extradite citizens for non-capital offenses. Like if you got arrested in Cambodia and flew home before they sentence you (false, they would probably hold your butt in a tiger cage for so much as the allegation of a serious crime) the US would probably ignore their request to send you to Cambodia because they would have to spend money to send you.

Looking at the Wikipedia article, the neurodivergents have said this:

As a French citizen, he has been protected from extradition and has lived mostly in France since then.

The Swiss did too, I guess.

On 12 July 2010, the Swiss rejected the United States' request, declared Polanski a "free man" and released him from custody

Consistent with its extradition treaty with the US, France can refuse to extradite its own citizens,[37] and an extradition request later filed by US officials was denied.[39] Polanski has never returned to England and later sold his home there. The US could still request the arrest and extradition of Polanski from other countries should he visit them, and Polanski has avoided visits to countries (such as the UK) that were likely to extradite him. In 1979, Polanski gave a controversial interview with novelist Martin Amis in which, discussing his conviction, he said "If I had killed somebody, it wouldn't have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But ... fricking, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to frick young girls. Juries want to frick young girls. Everyone wants to frick young girls!"

In late October 2014, Polanski was questioned by prosecutors in Kraków, and released. Back in 2010 the Polish prosecutor general stated that under Polish law too much time had passed since the crime for Polanski to be extradited.[123] On February 25, 2015, Polanski appeared in a Polish court for a hearing on the U.S. request for extradition. The judge scheduled another hearing to be held in April or sooner, to give time to review documents that arrived from Switzerland.[124]

On October 30, 2015, Polish judge Dariusz Mazur denied a request by the United States to extradite Polanski. According to the judge, allowing Polanski to be returned to American law enforcement would be an "obviously unlawful" act, depriving the filmmaker of his freedom and civil liberty. His lawyers argued that extradition would violate the European Convention on Human Rights. Polanski holds dual citizenship with Poland and France

So to answer the question, yeah it’s a privilege reserved for the French.

You’d need to have liquid assets.

Looks like if she had citizenship somewhere it would work:

Several countries, such as France, Russian Federation, Austria, China and Japan, have laws against extraditing their respective citizens. Others, such as Germany and Israel, do not allow for extradition of their own citizens in their constitutions

So if you want to commit crimes, buy Russian or French citizenship, I guess. Or find your Jewish grandparent.
