:marseytradraging:I can't believe there's talk about no fault divorce going away in the fricking U.S. : TwoXChromosomes

There is no fricking point in getting married if they remove no fault divorce. So, instead of trying to control women, they are fricking really telling them not to get married.

Do they think no one got married before no-fault divorce which has only been a fricking thing since the fricking 80s, b-word?

Isn't she undermining her argument by her two divorces, though? Both of them were for fault - the first husband was (allegedly) abusive, the second husband cheated. This isn't "no fault" divorce.

The whole idea of no-fault divorce was to allow people in abusive marriages to get out fast, since the abusive partner could just refuse to grant the divorce. It was also done to speed up the process where both parties agreed they wanted to end the marriage, but there weren't grounds such as cruelty or adultery.

But like everything else, it became too easy for one person to decide "I'm tired of being married, I want out" and to get divorced even if the other party wanted to work on staying married. So changes to no-fault divorce to correct abuses seem reasonable.

And yeah, if you're going into marriage with the decision firmly in mind "I can leave and get divorced whenever I want", then that's not much of a marriage and you might as well not bother.

Marriage is such a personal thing though. Why do other people get to decide legally how committed you have to be to your spouse?

It's definitely personal ... when you swear to god and your entire culture you will be together with one specific other person until one of you fricking dies.

Whoever wants a divorce should be thrown in jail for FRAUD at their wedding

This is just the legal fiction of "marriage". They should reduce administrative burdens. Making heathens follow a song and dance won't improve their morality. Maybe if they renamed it people would care less. Rightoids seem to think that making unhappy people stay together won't result in even more social groomercord, you can't rewind the clock.

I know I can get married once and only once in the Church, and that's the only true marriage

oh shit she replied! !commenters !dramatards give me a reply!

How many times do I have to explain this? Just because I had grounds for a no fault divorce doesn't mean I had to actually do a no fault divorce to get divorced. I chose the no fault divorce option because of what you stated, it's easier and faster.

Imagine for a moment that you were one of my husbands. If I came to you and said "Hey, we can do this the hard way and I can do a fault divorce and take you for everything you have OR you can agree to do a no fault divorce with me and we can split things equally and come to an agreement ourselves, thus saving us both time and money" which option are you going to pick? Because trust me when I say, if these men had the option to trap me in the marriage they probably would have. Neither of them wanted the divorce. They were getting everything they wanted while I was depressed and exploited. But my exes aren't idiots! They know a good deal when it's offered so they took the no fault divorce option.

Also you can use allegedly all you want but at the end of the day I don't have to provide people with reddit proof because my ability to divorce exactly how I wanted to proves that my exes were guilty and that I have proof. In fact, I have a crap ton of it. I'm not going to air my ex husbands' dirty laundry on the Internet for everyone to see because that is acting in bad faith and I am not a vindictive person. I don't need their names and reputations smeared to feel good about my decision to divorce them.

And heck, they have amendments about no fault divorces all the time. That's why there's a waiting period in my state. When there's children involved there's also mandatory classes you have to attend before you can get divorced. We aren't arguing that people consider divorce as something easy to do, we are arguing that abolishing no fault divorce entirely is bad, and it is!

When I got married I got married religiously where the promises were we would be monogamous and take care of each other and remain committed for eternity, even into the afterlife, as long as these promises were kept. My exes DID NOT keep those promises. I am well within my rights to say this is not what I agreed to and back out.

>Both of them were for fault

There is no at fault divorce for "abuse" and only 3 or 4 states have it for infidelity, though it might affect asset distribution in a couple more.

Here is the deal, you value marriage more than the freedom to escape a bad situation.
