>My father was an abusive, narcissistic performative Christian. He started spouting off one day because we suggested a restaurant he didn't want to go to. It hit a nerve, so I spoke up. He couldn't take me telling him off for his behavior.

>It had been a long time coming--he was belittling my mother as was his wont, and I couldn't stay quiet. He was sitting in his chair and I was standing about 6 feet from him, and he told me if I didn't shut up, he wouldn't be responsible for what he was going to do. He was a frail man, but huge. I called him out on his threat, and he (unsteadily) sprang up, arms outstretched, and wrapped his hands around my neck. He didn't have much power in his hands, so even with them around my neck had time to turn to my mother and look at her like "are you seeing this?" before I shoved him off me, him stumbling back and nearly missing his chair.

>The following morning, my mother tells me he was up "agonizing all night and praying", saying he couldn't believe he would do that! I told her he literally told me he was going to before he did it. He made the choice. He later apologizes to me, and says, "What happened was, as you were in my face yesterday (I was not) I saw the devil in your eyes. The devil was in front of me, so I had to choke him out". I told him that's not acceptable, he knew who he was talking to beforehand, and had made the choice, and explained what accountability was to him like I would to a child.

>This episode was the catalyst to his dying basically alone.

This one made me sad. I had fights with my dad a lot like this because I was being a selfish, ungrateful peepeehead. God I hope my child never gets woke.
