Cathlarpers can't admit that Jesus was killed by Pontius Pilate and the Roman authorities for being a rabble rouser. It was only hundreds of years after his death that Jesus was recast from Jewish zealot into the pacifist moral teacher (because that was more acceptable to Roman audiences)

The definitive work on the topic is "Jesus and the Zealots: A Study of the Political Factor in Primitive Christianity" by S.G.F. Brandon. Somewhat difficult to find a copy in a bookstore.
