The placenta is a fascinating part of the body. I think scientists think that a virus introduced the original placenta because of how strange it is. It's the thing that allows for mammals to have live birth, IIRC, without it the immune system would instakill the fetus
(because the fetus has different DNA) so you'd have to have a shell around it. It's pretty neat how it do dat!

I think aliens come over once in a while and modify some existing animals with genetic engineering to see how things work out. I used to be anti-placenta eating but I saw a woman describe it as one of the only times you can eat human and my mind has been changed. If I happen to give birth to a child I will be eating the placenta raw and hopefully only a few minutes after it has passed. Like nature intended, human sashimi.
