Have western gays abandoned advocating for other gays stuck in homophobic countries? : askgaybros

Umm all cultures are equal and beautiful (except for mayo culture) sweaty.

(Personal experience) Tbh I found most LGB people never gave a shit about foreign countries. Maybe some basic lip service, nothing more.

I do know of a number of non-binaries and 'queers' who go to Palestine protests and harp on about homophobia. They acknowledge the homophobia in the ME but consider the genocide more important (to paraphrase).

Yeah, of course it's been abandoned. Duh.

There are three key reasons:

1. This is the only kind of valid point. Is it really the responsibility of western government to protect minority groups in foreign countries when membership in that minority group is defined by its behavior?

2. Remember, most people (both progressives and conservatives) have no real principles and only advocate for policies that will piss off their opponents. So while rights for gay people in the third world was a good way to make conservatives mad, progressives thought it was a great idea. Now that there are better ways to piss off the right (like supporting the broadly homophobic Palestinian people), progressives will advocate for that instead.

3. People living in far away countries are abstract concepts at the best of times, so if a particular situation doesn't affect anyone a given person knows (again, regardless of that person's political beliefs), they're not going to care without constant reminders to do so.

Yeah but evangelical Christians in America do far worse to gays! What proof do I have? My mommy didn't let me sleep in on Sunday and forced me to put on nice clothes and go to church when I was growing up 15 years ago!!

Being concerned about homophobia in non-white cultures is just a red herring brought up by racists in bad faith to try to split the left. Don't take the bait.

Alot of the top comments there are like 'look don't want genocide or bombing...but Islam sucks, has always sucked, will always suck, and is one of the most genocidal regimes to ever exist so... meh?'

Queers for Palestine just have short attention spans. They don't believe that change isn't a gradual thing, but instead something you fight for, then receive immediately.
