why should ratings distributions be expected to be normal in general? Perfect blue is just naturally like that, there's no reason to rate it 1 star. You either like it or think it's eh, as opposed to more controversial films like the Bebop remake that have a preexisting fanbase to please (or fail to)

Was it objectively bad or just worse than the original? If it has even half the style of the source material I can easily see it being a 10/10 for someone who refuses to watch anime.
I liked the first two episodes because the production side was a masterwork. They did a great job recreating animation into a realistic and vibrant live-action set.
The acting and writing sucked though and killed it.
