Not about a specific movie but movies in general. I see this with younger coworkers.

People will watch a shit movie and tell you it wasnt that good. Then when a sequel is announced they pay to watch it in theaters and get pissy when the plot still sucks. Dont ever point this out to them they dont like it.

1. Avatar movies are better than everything else going on in hollywood right now. They do exactly what movies were meant to do. Not make you think or fanboy, but instead to go out and have a few hours of a good time. They are the closest thing we have currently to what the first people who got to see a movie in a theater for the first time must have felt.

2. Movies based on WW2 like Schindlers list are going to become outdated and unrelatable in a few more decades. Nobody will care about them at that point and all the old people talking about how important it is to watch a bunch of people get killed and suffer would look like a bunch of psycho weirdos.

3. Most movies have a shelf life. There is almost no forever has a worth movie. Even comedy movies from the 50's and 60's and 70's or whenever already feel outdated. There is nothing relatable about blazing saddles or airplane the movie. It doesn't come across as normal humor to modern audiences and nobody is going to care about them or even find them enjoyable experiences in the future. They are products of their time, at most of their century.

4. Jaws is a semi decent movie. An amazing movie for its budget, but in a functional hollywood where movies kept getting better it should never be in the top 10 monster movies list. The fact it is shows the stagnation of cinema in the west.

5. Nobody cares about black led movies. They will all fade away within a decade every decade. They have far more it's a fad energy than the normal tier of movies.

6. Marvel movies are actually pretty decent. Classic cinema failed because the directors making those films got too old and their "personal realistic character focused films" became too unrelatable. For example, Nightcrawler is a good character oriented movie, but it has none of the energy of something like reservoir dogs or pulp fiction. For many people the portrayals of character focused films of the 90's and 2000's no longer feel "real".

7. All character oriented films age the worst, because the more people centric your movie is, the more it is stuck in its current time period and the portrayals of that time. Giant explosions don't change with time. People and their expectations do.

8. Chinese cinema is meh and focuses too much on fantastical elements.

9. The kind of cinema and movies a nation produces gives us a view into the psyche of that society and can give us credible information about the kind of society you are dealing with. Iran is the most grounded. US is the most market oriented. India is the most fantastical and positive whimsical magical thinking based, and China is the most nationalistic with constant attempts at technical VFX improvements without cultural or character alterations.

10)Non movie opinion - South Korean pop is unironically shit and is based on having enough colors and brightness to attract the attention of children with ADHD and teenagers who are very easily influenced by the brightest backgrounds and child like energy.

11. Movies have currently perfected cinematic shots and backgrounds. The quality of 90% of movies today is better than the quality of 90% of movies of the 2000's. People's standards for what counts as good cinema are too high and they only give high scores to fanboy material rather than true quality. Most movies on Imdb rated 5 or above are watchable and even enjoyable if they are from a genre that you generally enjoy.

Literally everyone I know still laughs at airplane?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Airplane holds up. Some of its humor isn't "relatable" in the sense that airplanes don't allow smoking or canvassers inside, but there's a timeless classic hilarity to a woman waking up in bed next to a horse while her husband is on business and a guys who's "drinking problem" is him throwing drinks in his own face

It has the problem that a lot of the jokes are referring to Airport and it's sequels. Which nobody today has watched because '70s disaster movies suck. But most of the jokes still work even without knowing that the nun with a guitar is a character from another movie for example.

Nobody cares about black led movies. They will all fade away within a decade every decade. They have far more it's a fad energy than the normal tier of movies.

Most of what you said is r-slurred, but you actually came close to making a good point here. For a long time, movies made by Black directors and/or starring Black actors were inevitably about racism and/or being Black. And as time went by, and America got less racist, you had movies made by Black people that didn't have a darn thing to do with being Black. :marseydynamite:

And that was great! You could have a mystery film where the detective character was played by a Black actor, and the murderer wasn't a White racist or Black drug dealer. A comedy where 90% of the jokes weren't about being Black or some variation of "Black guys drive a car like this, but White guys...". A science fiction series set hundreds of years in the future where every fricking episode wasn't about how the captain is a Black man. :marseypicard: (Why is there no Sisko Marsey?)

But over the course of the past several years, we've gone in reverse. We're back to almost every movie made by a Black director and/or starring Black actors being about racism and/or being Black. And I hate it. Movies about race and racism have their place, but they can't be the only thing Black people are "allowed" to make! :marseykente:

I'm gonna go watch some Denzel Washington flicks and cool down. @Jerry_Cohen, put Fallen (1998) in the lineup for Halloween screenings. It's got a demon that isn't a hackneyed metaphor for "The White Devil". :capydevil:

this neighbor thinks people can immerse themselves into a fantasy universe but wouldnt be able to relate with Paul Newman films. Buster Keaton is even more impressive in the days of cgi slop. the stuntwork of 80s, edginess of 90s etc will always have their rightful place in discourse

as to point 9, every country makes everytype of film. it is your own vision that is drawing theses patterns from limited exposure. one of the major hits of the last decade in indian cinema was a grounded crime thriller which was later remade in 6 different languages (& counting) across the world, purely for its script. even its sequel has 3 scene to scene remake as of now

Horror and comedy are dead genres, there's maybe 1 watchable comedy a year and maybe 1 in 5 for horror.

Can't think of any movie that runs for much longer than 2 hours that wouldn't have been better if it was cut down. Could be that I just haven't met seen the right one yet I suppose.

This one is tough to describe but the bigger the stakes/consequences, the worse the movie, generally. "The-world-is-ending" disaster movies are the biggest offender, but action films suffer too, personal revenge or trouble is far tigher and more interesting of a plot for them. War movies or monster movies are the exceptions I suppose.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Horror is doing fine. Last ten years we've had The Witch, Get Out, Midsommar, and Hereditary. The vast majority is garbage but it's always been like that and there's a weird appeal to absolutely awful horror movies. Much funnier than any comedies this side of Tropic Thunder.

Long movies were better when they had an intermission. I know the idea is that the streamcel just pause to do whatever and the paying customers in the theater will just piss the 42 oz coke back where it came from, but frick give me a chance to take a piss, maybe grab a snack or have a smoke. Usually I get desensitized to whatever's going on about 2 hours in and I know for a fact I have a longer attention span than the average 21st century westoid.

South African movies, especially Afrikaans movies are sooooooooo bad

Because of all the censorship which I had terminally :marseyretard2::marseyretard2: longposted about, there was no competition or even great interaction between artists and filmmakers in SA, thus movies didn't have anything to compare to or learn from

Blacks and whites make extremely low grade and narratively poor movies during the 1980s period, it's just not a comparison how shockingly bad movies from that time was.

Additionally there was one corruption undercoverd in the apartheid era, where one of the scandals of the decade was that the minister of culture and arts? I don't recall the position, was found to be in cahoots with south African media companies and drive through theatres, so that the local movie industry had no foreign competition - thus he abused his position to influence the apartheid gov policy to have a widespread Bannon foreign movies, even beyond the usual censorship of criticism of the SA gov, as he was bribed by the local movie 🍿 industry
