South African movies, especially Afrikaans movies are sooooooooo bad
Because of all the censorship which I had terminally longposted about, there was no competition or even great interaction between artists and filmmakers in SA, thus movies didn't have anything to compare to or learn from
Blacks and whites make extremely low grade and narratively poor movies during the 1980s period, it's just not a comparison how shockingly bad movies from that time was.
Additionally there was one corruption undercoverd in the apartheid era, where one of the scandals of the decade was that the minister of culture and arts? I don't recall the position, was found to be in cahoots with south African media companies and drive through theatres, so that the local movie industry had no foreign competition - thus he abused his position to influence the apartheid gov policy to have a widespread Bannon foreign movies, even beyond the usual censorship of criticism of the SA gov, as he was bribed by the local movie 🍿 industry
Stories where I recount the various controversial and banned films throughout Southern Africa's histories. I made a series of 3 posts which recount controversial and dramatic films, from the earliest filmmaking devices in SA, to modern controversial movies.

We went to a musical called "Oh Africa, Brave Africa". It was a laugh riot.

In late 2000s I had an Ethiopian friend from college and he used to bring me to this Ugandan dudes house and the guy would always be playing these awful low budget movies and music videos from Uganda. My ethiopian friend who was obsessed with acting like he was better than Africans since he was a rich kid there would make fun of them for 20min straight. Good times.
The Zulu actors were underpaid extras extras, they could just as well have been underpaid matabeles from Zimbabwe or Namibia, their presence only cuz it was cheaper to actually film 🎥 at the source

I thought District 9 was pretty good, I guess it was just an outlier.

It's a British movie made by British people and filmmakers and actors, it was only filmed in SA, we can't claim shit on that movie 🍿🎥

they could've made a much better adaptation of Disgrace than the one they ultimately released. The book is so much better

Chappie was kind of average. Good film, not bad but just not as good as district 9. Still better than Elysium.
