They screwed up by doubling down on Johnny Depp and then assuming the films would continue to print money as the quality sank. Then they dropped Johnny over some bad PR during the height of the Amber Heard debacle. They refuse to admit that was a bad decision, since he was carrying the franchise (or rather, he is the franchise).
