Notice how they never make women, jews, or gays the monsters in the superhero films, its always white men.
Venom is literally black and straggy but is played by a straight white guy makes no sense.
Jump in the discussion.

There's been a number of white female villains in these sorts of things. The Marvels is even about fighting a generically brown woman out for revenge, possibly the least interesting single-film villain in a franchise where there's a lot to choose from.
But for as bad as The Marvels was, it wasn't a 'frick whitey/frick the patriarchy' type of woke. Capeshit like Blue Beetle, Captain Marvel, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 84 were, and literally none of the new Avengers characters are white men.
Diversity means not having to rebel against the white man because you just don't cast them. Bet they're tempted to for the new Kang, though, if they don't just wait a while and quietly bring back Jonathan Majors when it's been a couple of years. Though he actually did something wrong, as opposed to James Gunn, so it might be harder to sneak him back in.

Rly it was notable for being a sort of accurate portrayal of government dysfunction and muh inner city crime (except for the cheesy parts that aren't) and it came out during that time in the early 2000s when serialized TV was just starting to be treated like a big boy medium where you could show boobies and tell serious stories instead of just sitcomslop and soapslop. It was coming off the heels of Oz which was the grittiest and edgiest show ever at the time but in hindsight is hilariously bad.
It's a good well written show but the definition of overrated. It isn't Gods gift to television and there are some pretty stupid and pretty cornball parts.

!kino do you guys think even the original trilogy was slop? O maybe not as great as we remember?
The prequels were released when I was a kid, back then there was the Clone Wars show which I loved and I watched the original trilogy on dvd with my dad.
I rewatched “A New Hope” and Empire Strikes Back a few years ago and it didn't hit the same way, the plot was more cluncky and campy than I remembered and you can tell Lucas had no idea on where to take his films as his twists seemed improvised and plot points changed from one film to the next. The first Star Wars was a super innovative filme for its time in terms of production values and practical visual effects but at the end it was youth-oriented fantasy film from the 70s.

Did you watch the version where Lucas inserted a bunch of unnecessary scenes that had been edited out in the theatrical release? It totally kills the pacing of the first movie, which one of its greatest strengths.
Jump in the discussion.

The remastered version? Yes, the 2004 remasterization to be more precise, my dad got the DVDs back then and Lucas's remastering was made for the DVD release so there was no other way. I do remember watching Empire Strikes Back on tv when I was like 5, that was before DVD thing and I think that would be original footage. (I was born in ‘97 so always doomed to watch Lucas's remasterings )
Jump in the discussion.

I got them on VHS just before the remastered version.
It's like 1984. I can remember that Star Wars was good before they changed it, but I can't remember exactly how.
Iirc one thing is in the theatrical version they get off of Tatooine faster, which is where I find the story losing pace in the remastered version.

Honestly? It's probably nostalgia. I read about the changes, it didn't changed the plot. The main changes where q bunch of CGI aliens in Tattoine (whom looked fake as frick, very videogamy), they made Greedo shoot Han first, added more lighting to the Death Star raid sequence and a vertical ring at the death Star fireball.

They were just really cool, the essence of star wars is a mishmashing different genres into a fun heros journey, which is also made great by special effects and an incredible musical score. Virtually every good film maker now points to Star Wars having a huge impact on them when they were younger.
The prequels were bad, but still pretty fun. Massive special effects, expansion of the story, and another banging musical score elevated them to kind of be loved despite their heavy flaws.
The Disney slop just doesn't really get what made Star Wars such a pillar of popcorn flicks. Though fans may think they want some large extended universe like Marvel, it really misses the point of what made Star Wars stand out and not just be more sci-fi crap.
You can tell in interviews that Lucas doesn't really care about the nerds who obsess over lore and shit like that, the guy is just a huge film dork and views Star Wars as a way to explore narrative story telling and push special effects as far as they can go. I'll die on the hill that Lucas is a based film-chad

Also: I have come to STRONGLY suspect people over the age of 45 are just plain better at writing stories. I think something about that crystallized memory + (successful) midlife crisis resolution just makes it easier. Has anyone else noticed authors getting better at this age?

I never understood the esteem Empire Strikes Back was held in even as a child. The original Star Wars I think absolutely holds up and is all the better for it not originally being planned as part of a trilogy. Empire massively suffers from being definitely the middle film where everything feels like it's just preparing you for the next one and with Return not being very good that feels wasted. I can understand why at the time of it's release people got caught up in the hype of Empire because it is a well made film and has its moments but as someone watching it years later it never did much for me.
I'm always amazed at how hard they've consistently fumbled the Star Wars films since the original. The style, the world and the music are all so good all you need is a serviceable story and people would love it but they somehow are completely unable to manage that even once in about 8 films now.

I like star wars too much and could argue against this, but it's just a bunch of nerdy shit. The r-slurs seething about changes are as bad as the r-slurs trying to cultural revolution it.
90% of anyone who claims to hold star wars dearly enough that they give a shit about their nostalgia getting ruined, is either a poser (why would you be a nerd poser?) or was into old expanded universe (games, books, comics, other shit.) And anyone into old EU should remember half of it was shit that divided all the star wars fans.
Don't get me wrong this lady is a c*nt and it does annoy me a little extra that some of the bad writing is politically motivated, but it all may as well be arguing about the best way to play with dolls.
This all reminds me of an interview with George Lucas where he talked about how he liked doing TV better than movies, basically because you could frick up TV and no one would care. Pretty funny now.

Lucas does not view Star Wars as some massive fantasy world filled with lore, he sees it as a cool universe to explore narratives and mish-mash genres while pushing special effects as far as they can go. You can tell in interviews, he almost despises the nerds who push it as some tolkein-like universe to obsess over.
That's why I love nerds seething over his ideas when he owned it, he clearly doesn't care and just goes "oh this could be cool", the guy is not concerned with nerd culture or keeping some defined lore

He does have that magic child view of movies "wouldn't this be cool?", but he still wants HIS lore. The prequels were all him building his universe neurodivergentally. To me, he comes across as borderline envious of what the nerds made, because he'll do little quiet spergs about boba fetts not actually being a mandolorian and his guardians of the whills shit or the sith home world.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Yeah, a little bit, but he's not sitting there writing some super serious background of everything. The Prequels only exist to tell the story of Anakin, which is what the universe is built around. He basically wanted to tell a tragedy that felt like the fall of Rome, so he made a soap opera.
I really don't think he's envious, I don't think he cares much and just tossed off handed things out there that he thinks are cool. Fett is a good example, a fan favorite and he prob thought "how cool would it be if Fett was a leftover clone trooper?" Turns out, not that cool, but that's pretty much where it seems his head it at. He was pretty well known for letting authors and other ppl come up with stuff as long as it didn't change his story in the films. Heck, he was cool with letting Lucasfilm sounds and stuff be used by fan film ppl, so I really don't think he views the lore as some sacred thing.
I love how he just off handedly throws ideas out there and doesn't give a shit. Like, Sam Jackson asked for a purple lightsaber and he's like "sure sounds cool"
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
With fett he was more seething about the mandolorian thing. He had some convoluted backstory about how the Fetts weren't "real" mandolorians, and he compromised with filoni making the cartoon. He does this little neurodivergent blink and shake when he talks about them being fake mandolorians. I do love how much he is very like a big kid. Looks like he's refusing to eat vegetables sometimes.

Haha I haven't seen that convo, I thought the Fetts were confirmed non-mandos? That changed?

I think hating on midichlorians is dumb because if you paid attention to the movie they're just singe cell organisms attracted to the force, and a bunch of tards who can't process dialogue decided it meant they were some kind of force beings that produce the force.
But this is a shameful discussion.

I think midichlorians were simply Lucas' way of explaining how the Jedi recruited back in the day and why they would have a reason to be interested in an unlikely boy from backwater Tatooine at all.
The alternative would probably just be Liam Neeson closing his eyes and "sensing" that Anakin is the chosen one or whatever. Idk if that would be better.

The original Star Wars was a standalone movie. They introduce a prophetic hero, he gets a magical sword, he meets a rebel gunslinger, he learns magic from an old wizard, and the good guys figure out how to blow up the bad guy's doomsday device.
It should have ended there.
Empire Strikes Back was a fantastic movie with a lot of great plot elements, especially where the hero makes out with his own sister and their dad is trying to kill them (I would if I was him).
Unfortunately in order to finish the plotline of Empire, you have to watch Return of the Jedi, which is dogshit far age for children due to Eewoks. It was made by !r-slurs for !r-slurs.
I can partially forgive Lucas since it was the early 80s, and if you made an action movie where you didn't have the Prophecy Hero Save The Children, then you weren't getting the green light from the producers.
1983 Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Save the baby fuzzy Eewoks.
1984 Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom. Save the enslaved children digging for magical stones.
1985 Mad Max: Beyond Thuderdome. Save the kids at the crashed airplane or something.
Anyway I hate Return of the Jedi. It is not !kino. But it is part 2 of Empire. Neither movie needed to be made because the ultimate story is "the bad guys built a giant death star and the good guys blew it up" which is the story that A New Hope already told, and which episodes 7-8-9 tell again.
Star Wars sucks.

I'll give Lucas some credit that the Empire was a hostile takeover from within, and that the Rebels are fighting back to restore freedom.
And as much as I want to hate on the Prequels which I will lovingly do right now:
The Eewoks were Proto-Jar Jar Binks !kino
Midichlorians reduce The Force away from Samurai Training and Focus, which means not everyone can be a Jedi
The Force Awakens (Episode 7?) closed with a cinematic message that "anyone can be a Jedi!" Like that one street urchin with a broom.
And maybe it was 8 or 9 where they burned down Luke Skywalker's temple and BURNED THE BOOKS but that was a good thing because being a Jedi doesn't make you good, even though all the other movies said those are the good guys who used The Force.
Well okay that was more than the Prequels. But it ties in.
Back to what you said: A New Hope just blows up the Death Star and you see Vader's ship careen out of controlm ht he doesn't die. But also, it's an empire and he is not the emperor. Gotta keep that in mind.

I would have loved if they were more space samurais not space monks. Like celibacy isnt must have. But is seen virtue. Anakin could have 5 children. Maybe some jedies go evil and end up killing his family. That is big part why he wants to do away with jedi.

Out on the balcony, when Kilo kissed Ray's lips, her knees went weak. Slowly, he pulled her top down, exposing her soft, unyielding breasts. Just the sight of those breasts made Kilo's peepee very hard, like a lightsaber's handle. His peepee was of considerable size, and now beads of sweat slowly ran down his peepee, making it glisten like a strong swimmer, fresh from out of the pool. It was a fantastic peepee, that seemed as strong as a horse's leg, yet as delicate as a flower wrapped in silk. What a grand, grand peepee.
Ray couldn't help but feel aroused. "Go on", she said softly, "Touch me." Ray laid down slowly and let Kilo brush her bare stomach with his fingertips... His hand felt good on her stomach. Like a peepee. A soft, but sturdy peepee that felt warm to the touch. In Ray's mind, she suddenly felt like she was surrounded by peepeees. They were all around her, flopping all around and slapping her face. It was as if she were in a redwood forest of peepeees. They presented themselves tall and mighty all around her.
That's the hot Ray s*x scene done, I'll let you guys finish writing the rest.

Impressive. Normally people with such severe developmental disabilities struggle to write much more than a sentence or two. He really has exceded our expectations for the writing portion. Sadly the coherency of his writing, along with his abilities in the social skills and reading portions, are far behind his peers with similar disabilities.

I wrote about that in another comment. A New Hope gives the impression that the Empire is a military dictatorship, and on the first film Tarkin outranks Vader who's there as an Imperial Envoy, not as number 2.

That was Lucas' original idea I hear. The Empire transitioned from the Republic when military guys took over and used the former President as a puppet ruler. It wasn't until later that he wrote Palpatine.
But Ian McDiarmid's acting is great so Palpatine is good actually

It is. But emperor is massive albatross on star wars neck. One guy behind all evil.
But that guy dose heck of job.

Excatly. And if you cut that emparor scene. That could have been case in empire. Its just vader unleashed.
Then if you want to have your space battle amd vaders redemption. You can set in some power behind throne conference. There vader goes ham and kills them. Then duels luke and offers luke place at his side. But in end luke convince him.
Conference happens on space station and space battle is around it.
Also prequels would easier to do. Anakin sees republic and jedi oder as corrupt. Joins force with powerful people and they perform coup.

Empire Strikes Back is a good movie, but it's the example of Lucas radically diverging from the first film.
On “Star Wars” Darth Vader is a high ranking imperial official, but there's nothing to indicate he's number 2. The Empire feels like a military dictatorship and Tarkin kinds of bosses him around. The Starshit nerds will come up with some fancy lore bullshit like “akshually it was just out of respect”. Speaking on “Return of the Jedi”, Leia's reveal as Luke sister's feels so random, nothing we saw before hinted they could be related and made the galaxy incredibly small.
The Emperor was barely mentioned in Star Wars but you could see he was a menacing shawdowy figure by the way Tarkin spoke of him. On ESB and RoJ it turns out the emperor is an evil wizard, Vader is number 2 and the whole rebellion gets reduced to a family feud. Lucas thought the first film was going to flop so he probably never gave much thought on how precisely he would bake the future sequels.

One of ANH's qualities is how well paced it is, and part of that is not diving to far into what's going on. We only know what we need to know, so clarity on Vaders rank doesn't really matter.
1. The Empire is evil
2. Vader is a big bad guy, doesnt matter where he ranks because he's clearly intimidating and powerful
3. Rebellion good
That's really all the setting you need, and that's where it excelled. Just enough info, but not enough to weigh the story down. LOTR film trilogy is similar, you never know alot about Sauron, just that he's evil because that's all you really need.

If you compare the cinematography and acting and direction of the first film compared to every other sci-fi, action, samurai, or cowboy movie in 1977 -- I'll even wager 1972-1982 -- A New Hope is the greatest movie within its peer group and deserves its fandom. And I don't even like it that much.
I don't mean to rip on Arnie, but go back and watch Commando (1985) and Predator (1987). They fricking suck.
Alien (1979) is !kino, and while Aliens (1986) is well made, it gets sucked back into that r-slurred Prophecy Hero Saves The Children bullshit. Newt dies before Alien 3 so don't even fricking include her as a trope.

Idk. Predator has elements that have aged well even for a modern audience.
Going with a new hope, I suppose the Lawrence of Arabia-esque desert shots are cool but for me there's nothing else to admire.
It's a sci-fi epic where the spectacle and action looks incredibly dated. Predator has some dated vfx but it benefits from the fact that movie uses "don't show the monster" trick to build suspense and once we do get a look at the predator we are faced with very convincing(even by modern standards) prosthetics.
It might seem shallow to judge them by action and spectacle but at the end of day they're not some character study or a noir flick. I saw A New Hope after watching flicks like Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, etc...when I was a kid and it felt incredibly LAME in comparison.

It may not seem that impressive now but it was a long time. Up until the 1990s there was nothing that was even in the same category to compete with it in terms of special effects.

Wrong!
A New Hope is good, but I wouldn't want to watch it again. Been about 15+ years since I've seen any of them. Last time I tried rewatching the first trilogy, I almost fell asleep. They're pretty cheesy, and the action scenes are so dumb.

I don't remember the last time I tried to watch any Star Wars at all.
But like for real, if you're quoting my Arnie statement then we gotta talk it out.
Commando -- Okay so like he just fricking rips out the passenger seat of the sports car, meaning there is no seat belt, and during a high speed chase they crash into a goddarn pole, and nobody is ejected from the car.
Predator -- Of course I like the gay handshake scene. But like, the helicopter dialog? And the nerdy guy tells the big kitty joke. "See, because of the echo?" THANKS FOR EXPLAINING THE JOKE!

It's not a comedy. The joke itself isn't the point. They're showing that this character is nervous so he's telling these jokes to pretend that he's not.

I feel like Jurassic Park aged much better than Star Wars even if the Dinos were inaccurate. On the other hand Star Wars aged better than the Richard Donner's Superman films. My dad watched them at the movies as a kid and occasionally rewatches them out of nostalgia but they look so bad now, I remember my sister's cringe face when he tried to re-watch it with us lmao.
