idk Tolkien was a devout Catholic (who is in the process of being Canonized), a WWI Combat Vet, a father, and respected philologist and linguist--his works have value not only as entertainment, but as literature.

Definitely a devout Catholic though. @Lv73_Slime @BWC (tag for actual radtrad mention, he stood up during one of the first Masses offered in the vernacular and loudly responded in Latin and was one of the figures responsible for TLM continuing in England, along with Agatha Christie and Graham Greene) !Catholics

True, he was radtrad but more in a good hearted old guy way and less in a new schismatic kind of way.

His books brought many people back to Christ and many people into the Catholic church.

I wasn't trying to criticize him so much as just pointing out that the current political situation in the Church does make it unlikely he receives (further) formal recognition. It's also not super common for anyone but martyrs to get a quick process just in general. St. Teresa, St. Pio (also a TLM enjoyer) and soon to be St. Acutis are exceptions to the norm.

Personally, I would like the Church to reconsider important historical figures like Origen and Blessed Duns Scotus who were rejected mostly for being "heterodox thinkers" before pushing through pious celebrities but I'm probably the oddball for feeling that way and it would also similarly be a source of drama internally. Origen in particular won't happen, though, even if he formed a huge basis for all theology. :marseyshrug:

It kind of depends on Tolkiens book tbh. The Hobbit was intended as a children's book but the Silmarillion and its prose is way too complicated for kids and even some adults struggle with it, but that's because the Silmarillion is more like a mythology compendium.

Regardless of that children's literature can still be top notch. Look at the Jungle Book or The Little Prince.

Nah. Regardless of DEIslop, its just bad. Horrible writing, honestly just god-awful. Everything else is mid at best. Stunt choreography is awful, but that seems to be a requisite nowadays in hollywood, havent seen good one in probably a decade. Effects are okay i guess.

Honorable mention to the dwarf guards that you could see for like 2 seconds once, even though they were in the background, you could tell it was children in the costumes and they had no idea what they were doing. Absolute Middle-school level acting.

The writing is pretty shit. They made Galadriel so fricking unlikeable and she is supposed to be one of the main protagonists.

Jump in the discussion.

They actually make you root for Sauron, which is impressive subversion of the story and Tolkien would probably physically assault the writers for it

Jump in the discussion.

It felt like they were going for a "hero learns their lesson and grows as a person" narrative, but forgot to put something in to make us like the hero so we root for them to become better.

Jump in the discussion.

That makes more sense when the protagonist isn't thousands of years old

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

And she was the mother in law to Elrond even though the show kind of acts like they are the same age despite Galadriel being like 5000 years old at this point and Elrond would have been like ~1700 at the time of the forging of the rings.

Not to mention she was one of the key figures in the forging of the Simarils, the Kinstrife and the entire War of Wrath in the First Age where there were literal gods fighting on the battlefield against Morgoth lol.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The character that got treated the worst was poor Celebrimbor - turned into a doddering old fool (even though he's a generation younger than Galadriel) in a granny dressing gown who has to be told about alloys by some scruffy mortal Man, and just hangs around in the background doing nothing until the very last episode. They took the Celebrimbor and Narvi Elf-Dwarf friendship we should have had, and turned it into Elrond and Durin instead, so he didn't even get that much in the scripts.

Seriously, him being tortured to death by Sauron in the second season (if they stick to canon storyline) will be a better ending than anything the show has done to him so far.

Jump in the discussion.

Not really. Forget all about Tolkien, even as a Basic TV Fantasy Show, it's not that great. Mostly because the guys in charge as showrunners, Payne and McKay, spent ten years writing movie scripts that never got made (so that tells you the quality we have here).

They updated everything for "the modern audience" so we got Girlbossing all over the place, Look We Have Diversity, and forgot to include any plot. It's only eight episodes long, which is too short for everything they needed to do, but they still wasted about three episodes with "Numenor is not going to war. Okay Numenor is going to war. Hold on, we've changed our minds. Now we changed them back again".

The best actor in the show was the guy who played Adar, the Orc Father. And he's left and has now been replaced for the second season, so that's a bad sign. Also, what made me laugh, is that the idiot writers tried to set up a Star-Crossed Lovers romance in the first season, forgot to have any actual chemistry between the actors, and now the Look We're Diverse actress half of this couple has quit and won't even be in the second season. Unfortunately the Look We're Diverse male half of the couple is staying and he is as wooden as a tree when it comes to acting.

I'm going to watch (or at least watch the reviews) of the second season, which starts in August, purely out of spite to see how dumb and stupid they can go (for example, their notion of a clever disguise nobody will ever see through is to have the Sauron of the first season come back, only this time he's wearing a wig and Elf ears. Surely nobody will suspect anything wrong there!)

But if you just want some fun escapist TV or streaming show? Can't really recommend it. Stick with House of the Dragon which has better reviews and beat Rings of Power like a gong in their respective first seasons.

It's mid. Not at all as bad as the seethe implies. Lots of (ironic) purposeful autism in the criticism. But still really mid. If you need to consoom some fantasy, you could put it on the list.

I like watching LOTR nerds seethe though. They've been so haughty about how majestic the 00s trilogy was. Peter Jackson stuff is overrated autism that had to keep a distance from the truly neurodivergent Tolkien shit, which is so neurodivergent can never be translated to any kind of mainstream media because no fricking gives a shit that Sauron and Gandalf are fire angels distantly related to balrogs who attacked the great spider tree twin lamps that lit the world before men were born because of the air angels that are also god elves or something.

Visually it actually looks pretty nice. The dialogue was overall good when there were 2 people on screen, and not great the more people there were(especially the speeches).

Story wasn't good, but it wasn't horrid. Music was good, although it's not something I care much about.

I'm still very confused as to why rightoids hate it so much, since the show itself doesn't really have woke messaging in it-just the marketing.
