What are the worst cases of millennial writing/redditism you've ever watched? :soyjakyell: :soyjak: :soysnoo:

We've been watching ds9 for a few months now and we're on like season 4 and it's just not clicking at all like TOS or TNG did

I mean it's fine

But none of the characters with the exception of Quark and to a lesser extent Rom really stand out

The best non-Ferengi is Odo and even he's just very middling

Kira is hideous and terrible, Sisko can't act for shit, Bashir is an annoying little twink, Dax is hot but very uninteresting, the kids are annoying uhhh who else is there

The only compelling characters are O'Brien and Worf and they're unsurprisingly transfers from TNG, I don't care about any of the rest and I'm so sick of looking at Kira and listening to Kira and having the writers try to sell Kira is hot instead of some ugly annoying hag and jdjfnfndndn

Contrast to TNG where everyone but Wesley and sometimes Beverley were incredible characters with depth and interesting development and things to say and do

DS9 fine but nothing special

I love DS9 but understand. It is far from capturing the same sense of adventure, since they stay in one place.

Although the first 2 seasons are the worst, massively improved when the original writer moved to Voyager. BUT, the improvement came from some dramatization and longer term character development/arcs. Which can also be a turn off for TNG/Voyager stans.

It's DEFINITELY improving after the first few seasons but just frick me is it taking its sweet time in elevating itself above being just somewhat passable

To boldly go where... here, we're already here. It's a space station so it doesn't go anywhere.

Voyager is TNG except the ship is lost way out in space completely out of contact with the Federation or any other familiar species. I like it, so you probably won't. Lots of people don't. They have great borg kino though.

Voyager is nothing but lost potential for me for some of the reasons you mentioned. But I watched it first-run on UPN, and while I like TNG more, VOY was my first Star Trek that was on week to week, excluding the last two years of TNG.

I am also an oldstrag if that helps.

Seriously, if you like Trek and also inside stories about the making of it, I really recommend "The 50 Year Mission." Great insights there. For example, did you know that Mulgrew was schtumping Winrich Kolbe, one of the most recurring Trek directors in the Berman era? Or you can learn just how bad Mulgrew was to Jeri Ryan when she came to the show, like fricking awful. Robert Beltran, in perfect Chakotay fashion, mostly checked out by the second year and was mostly in it for the steady paycheck.

Voyager has a kind of interesting plot development and setting but also the worst characters of any Trek. Chakotay is very cringe although he kinda crosses into being hilarious sometimes; Tuvok is like an even more annoying Vulcan with emotional problems and also he's black :marseynoooticer: ; Parris is all the worst aspects of Riker and Bashir in one character; the Doctor is insufferable; Neelix is worse than all of them put together. If you're annoyed by Jadzia and Bashir and Kira you're not going to be happy with the Voyager crew. And at least two of those get better as the series goes on.

I think that is a good description. DS9 really benefits from its last seasons when the Dominion War picks off and you finally see all the ST races interact with each other in something new.

I also massively dislike the whole religious Bajoran prophet shit.

The characters are - as you pointed out - also not that great when compared with the TOS / TNG crew. Quark, Odo & Garak stand out because they're something new.

Jump in the discussion.

DS9 only started clicking mid season 3 and then really found its groove after Worf joined. There's the pew-pew of the Dominion War, which itself was a bit of a shock for Star Trek; none of the shows had ever depicted (only referenced) previous military engagements like that. TNG alluded to the Cardassian-Federation War if you'll recall from "The Wounded." From season 4 on to the end, there are roughly 5 to 6 major plots going together across multiple episodes, with standalone ones scattered in there. "In The Pale Moonlight" is one of my favorites, and there's another with the Defiant crew all talking to a federation captain whose ship is down on a planet and getting to know her, but it comes with a twist ending. Berman gave Ira Steven Behr alot of discretion on DS9 because by like season 3 of DS9, they were already fully into Voyager, which was their new TNG-lite show, with a great premise that's ultimately squandered

When you get to Voyager, you'll see equal measures of misses and hits, but the hits are never as good as TNG's. On the whole, Voyager is a lot of "man, this could have been BSG before BSG." Which is why the creator of the reboot BSG left Voyager after like 3 episodes once his DS9 stint was done.
