I think someone at WB mistakenly thought the first Joker's success was because of Todd Philip's creative genius and not because of the general popularity of the brand and the novelty of the whole thing. Making it a musical where the Joker is a simp loser who gets BTFO by a foid was never going to sit well with its main target audience.

That's the first film minus the musical part. He was an incel simping for Zazie Beats (whatever her name is).

Joker (2019) is "what if Taxi Driver, but set in Gotham City".

It should have been left as a standalone, any sequel would pale in comprise t to the success of the first film.
