Canada is admitted as at least 10 states;

Would never happen, !burgers has done a lot through history to keep states equal. 10 new Canadian states would massively upset the balance of power and lead to instability

The Electoral College is abolished and the U.S. Senate is mostly crippled of its power if not completely abolished.

Literally authoritarian. They want a tyranny of the majority

Either way you're right, the U.S. won't admit another state unless it's 100% red or blue and the corresponding red or blue has deep control at the time.

That's akin to maybe five average US states.

But California alone has 40M people and $4T GDP.

The US Senate is the worse example of an upper legislative chamber.

Even the British House of Lords is far superior.

The US Senate is too anti majority, and the filibuster only makes it more dysfunctional.

The British House of Lords is unelected, and it can only delay legislation.

The House of Commons can override it.

However, in terms of actual debate, amendments proposed and the quality of legislators, I'm personally very impressed by them.

Note the ingenious political strategy here: after we are admitted as states, I want to gut my state's political rights and influence. You see, I'm confident that I share the views of a majority of the U.S. population and that this will never ever change.

1. These leafBIPOCs also have a bicameral legislature so what even is their hangup over the Senate? Is it because they acquitted Drumpf twice?

2. Considering they're a population of 41 million they wouldn't have the numbers per individual Canadian state to make much difference in the House; they would however expand the Senate by 20% which would be huge if he didn't want to also cripple the Senate for... reasons.

3. 10 states makes sense but probably wouldn't happen because of how much it would disrupt national politics. 5 is probably more realistic.

Anyway, I'd be down for admitting Canada. Acquiring Canadian resources like fresh water would be forward thinking plus it would bring us one step closer to the new colossus.

Our Senate can't filibuster forever, it's unelected and therefore restrained in blocking the elected House of Commons. Much better than having the worthless American Congress that can't legislate.

And letting Senators confirm judges, members of the Executive branch is fricking stupid. It creates perverse incentives for regional special interests.

Our Prime Minister can directly appoint Supreme Court judges, bureaucrats, ambassadors, a new Governor General, Senators, and Cabinet Ministers (if they're an MP or Senator), Federal Judges, and Provincal superior court judges!

>A diplomatic union with terms agreeable to Canada wouldn't happen because it would shift the balance of power too hard against Republicans. The "plausible" scenario is that the US imposes unfavorable terms that would limit our political power in the new union to not shift the balance of power in the US.

>And why would Canada agree to unfavourable terms?? And I was clear about my acceptable conditions.

This has to be a bit. I don't believe that even a redditor could fail to realize that the conditions HE POSTED would utterly annihilate Canada's political power in this hypothetical annexation. It's literally the single most devastating thing the U.S could possibly do.

I kinda don't get it when redditors say poors just have to die in the US. I can see small business owners/employees falling between the cracks tho

Went to a doctor in Florida on vacation with 0 insurance and it cost us $5. The meds were cheaper than the uninsured cost in Canada, $10 vs $40. Arkansas friend had free state insurance when he moved there and didn't have a job, now he works at Amazon and has a $0 deductible and great coverage for $26. I pay more out of pocket than that dude for meds with 2 types of insurance in Ontario plus a lot more out of my taxes lol. These don't strike me as especially progressive areas/employers so wtf

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Cause red states have a ton of poors who need those protections. Medicare and Medicaid do a lot of heavy lifting as a baseline safety net.

The real problem with the lack of universal coverage is that uninsured people don't get enough regular checkups and treatment for chronic conditions which land them in the hospital in the first place.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I can agree with that in spirit but as an Ontarian (curious about other !leafs provinces?) my doctors office has a sign saying they don't do physicals or checkups anymore because our healthcare system is so overburdened so no one here gets preventative care either lol

I'm from BC and I haven't had a check up since the 80s. I signed up for some wait list to get a family doctor about six years ago and the only thing I hear from that is an email about once a year asking if I still want to be on the list. In fairness though, I've done nothing else to get a doctor.

My doctors has told me explicitly that if I need to see her for more than what I expect would take her 5-10 minutes I need to tell the girl when I'm booking an appointment that I need an "extended" appointment. Last I saw her she told me she had over 1700 active patients.

because our healthcare system is so overburdened

This is a very new phenomenon. Maybe backlog after COVID? I never learned why.

You also dont need regular physicals unless you're over 50. We need better mixed systems where you can pay out a few hundred to get stuff like that. I think private care has to be fully separate and usually has a retainer.

I've lived in a few provinces. Some do recommend physicals each year. Other provinces make you pay for it and say it's not necessary. If you ask people from these provinces they act like people who believed the CDC in 2020 when they said that masks don't help with covid. They say it's not useful and the stress of a false positive is worse than the small chance a person has a real issue. Sounds like bs imo
