The legacy publishing houses have been notoriously hard for men to be published through for about 20 years, same goes for larger niche houses, ie TOR books. But black transwomen can get anything they scribble on paper through without issue.
I've been reading more and more 40K books, which i admit is the popcorn equivalent of literature out of sheer boredom from books recently, and books are astronomically expensive in RSA these days, so I don't have the option to experiment as much as i had during my highschool days for different books in different genres by different authors
I also find modern women writers to be appalling, especially their male characters. It's like the inverse of /r/MenWritingWomen, where we are aware men have been writing women badly for many decades and are calling it out, but there appears to be little conscience in modern international society to pressure womankind to up their game when writing from the male perspective.
I don't know how to put it in words even, it's all so fricking flat.
I've read women like Ursula Leguin before in Left Hand of Darkness and Earthsea saga, and sometimes it was heavy, but the men felt real? Not as doormats or soys, or fanatasies or idealized or anything. They felt solid and corporeal. I don't have the capacity to describe it
When Robert Jordan of Wheel of Time wrote women, he was honestly very boomerish sometimes, in his world of battle of the sexes, where men are all from Mars and Women are all from Venus; but there was an absolute sincerity. He made clear patterns of tremendous effort to write from the female perspective, to see flawed and inspiring women organically interact with each other and their male peers. Sometimes he faltered, but his world and women in them was organic and real.
I know rightoids are bitching about soyslop in movies, but i feel a similar emptyness has invaded literature from libraries, bookstores and 2nd hand shops the past decade. I cant put it in words
Because I actually enjoy books, the feel of them. Reading from kindle or your phone or whatever a pdf will never replace the sensation and enjoyment I have from paper .
But the price of novels literally are out of my price range
I still buy 2nd hand books, and can afford new books, but it's just not worth it at the speed I read, at like once a new book every week or fortnight
I know a guy like that, his room is filled with books stacked on the floor He's built a bunch of shelves but ran out of space on his wall between bookshelves+other decorations
11 dollars for 200 pages paperbacks is just about the same price as here. I never thought that as particularly expensive, just as the price. That hardcover I posted from the Origins of the Species costed me 109 R$ or 20 dollars, fair price imo.
What I thought was expensive was the Analytic Geometry book I used at my freshman year in college, it costed 180R$ back then. I don't remember how was the dollar back then but the Real was stronger.
The US prices are no better, I usually check at Amazon.
It's not new, there's always been soyslop for the masses, it's just that now what the "average reader" (ie a foid) wants is empowered female characters, smut, and men being called pigs. Look at how bad 95% of serials were in the 20s, or books by unknown authors in the 1800s. We retroactively praise past authors because we are looking at them through their best forms. Not every writer was Lovecraft, Peepeeens, Shakespeare, and Homer, most are and were George Charles Wallis, Jacob Abbott, Francis Beaumont or Eumelus of Corinth.
There was an awful lot of pulp and slop written that’s been consigned to the dust bin of history. But at the same time, if you all at the great books published from 1900 to 1923, then try to find an equal amount of greats from 2000 to 2023…you just can’t. It’s no contest.
Nobody reads 100% of what's published in a given year, and I doubt anyone even skims 50% of it. Nobody's asking for all literature to be perfect, rather, of all the mediocre work that's published, at least one or two good books a year is what people are hoping for.
I have to agree with what's been said, even the "good" art we get nowadays, that's supposed to "challenge" the audience and subvert expectations is just so literal, uncreative and Youtube essay'd out. How many "see they're superheroes, but they're BAD GUYS" did we get already? Or "Lovecraftian" schlock? There's also been, to put it bluntly, a growing hatred of literature, as the idea that all art is essentially propaganda spreads in liberal circles. Students insisting they shouldn't have to be familiar with the works of dead white cis men, people posting any uncharitable depiction of a woman to /r/menwritingwomen, etc. We simply live in a time where not only is bad art put on a pedestal, but good art is detested, and good artists are actively punished. It won't last forever, but since at least Orange Man's presidential campaign we've had to suffer this rut.
I also find modern women writers to be appealling, especially their male characters. It's like the inverse of /r/MenWritingWomen, where we are aware men have been writing women badly for many decades and are calling it out, but there appears to be little conscience in modern international society to pressure womankind to up their game when writing from the male perspective.
One thing I can't help nooticing is how little womyn understand men.

Women are cut from the rib of man. It’s like asking a tiny Russian doll how many times it took opening dolls too get too them. They have no idea they just exist. Men have never been bad at depicting women. Women just don’t like men depicting women for whom they truly are
I don't know how to put it in words even, it's all so fricking flat.
I think the problem is some women see male characters as these blank slates that they can do whatever with and not have to worry about any complexities because they have no "inherent struggles" and don't come with baggage like minorities (anyone not a white straight male) do
When Robert Jordan of Wheel of Time wrote women, he was honestly very boomerish sometimes, in his world of battle of the sexes, where men are all from Mars and Women are all from Venus; but there was an absolute sincerity. He made clear patterns of tremendous effort to write from the female perspective, to see flawed and inspiring women organically interact with each other and their male peers.
Robert Jordans writing of women and relationships should be considered a war crime. It's so fricking awful I have no idea how anyone manages to slog through his obnoxious, shitty books.
I gave up on them entirely due to how shit he was at writing women and women interacting with men along with his weird butt fascination with braid tugging.

The real criminals are the "Historical Fiction Coomers", a large group of writers who love using historical settings and an neurodivergent fascination for history to write clunky, embarrassing smut that takes up far more of the novel than should even be considered. I read a lot for my degree, and most books I read to tune out are slop, for pure entertainment value. But not nuslop like shit passed through sensitivity readers with mentally ill screeds and self inserts by bipoc xe/xir queer tranxisters, which seems to be pushed hard in modern literature.
Written by an insane transbian. The author's self-insert character hunts down and kills JK Rowling. He also fantasises on twitter about raping and murdering Bussy Singal.
It’s also basically unreadable even though it’s mercifully short. The author constantly overuses adjectives to describe women, every sentence is like “the blond tall woman walked over to the short skinny brunette woman, who was sitting next to the muscular blond short woman”. There’s a ton of basic grammatical errors too, and the graphic scenes of violence (of which there are many) are remarkably poorly written, as if the author was writing with one hand for some reason.

On par with Bill Orielly writing a novel about a middle aged newscaster fricking his coworkers and going on a shooting spree against all the network executives
Bill O'Reilly is actually a decent author when he puts away the culture war nonsense. His pop history books are about as good as you're gonna get in that genre. Also, it's always funny seeing how nitpicky people get just because it's O'Reilly writing them.
Check out the Wikipedia page for Killing Lincoln. Half the article is listing inaccuracies, most of which are minor errata no one would give a shit about in any other pop history book.

Anyone writing a book today is wasting their time. There are more books written before the year 2000 than anyone can ever read in a lifetime and those books cover any subject of significance to readers today.

Agree. There's definitely good films, made after 2012, i'm just not really interested in trying to find them amongst all the shit, when there are literally thousands of great films made before then that are worth watching and easy to find.

"zeitgeist" is when sci-fi authors imagine the future as "whatever the big thing right now, but massively scaled up and more efficient". That's why Foundation was all about nuclear power, while contemporary sci fi is about how everyone has an IoT implant connected to the rest of the solar system.
I dunno where you have been for the last 5 years but now it's all about s, queers, and lesbians except now they're rulers of space kingdoms, riding giant mechs, and firing gay conversion beams at the masses. It's very tiring, especially since science fiction already explored the question of transhumanism, but because of white women and mentally ill dudes in dresses we're actually regressing on the topic.
I feel you, the best new science fiction is still written by straight white males lol. Pretty crazy how in 2023 I can just read the name of the author on the cover of a book and know whether to give it a shot or not.
I like Snowcrash because it's such a foundational piece of the cyberpunk genre. It's more fascinating as a look into the minds of the early tech-libertarian mindset that were thinking about the transition to the digital age and the End of History. Obviously, their societal predictions didn't quite pan out, but like all scifi the story itself tells far more about the time and place it was written than about any serious analysis of the future. It's so entirely cynical, yet somehow radiates the starry-eyed optimism that the technologists in the pre-WWW era had.
They won’t cover rdrama. Stay tuned for my forthcoming release: Marseys of the wind and sky - the remarkable true story of one man’s quest to find the truth of it all 🤧

Also buying every book you read compromises shelf space pretty fast unless you have a library room in your house

Also zeitgeist is a stupid word.

I agree, but my cut off point, for not just books but also movies and tv, is 2012, around when they really started shoving idpol up everything.

Foundation is not about nuclear power. That's why people still read it 70 years later. Lets see how many people are still reading Snowcrash in 2060.
Jump in the discussion.
