I'm not going to play the games (not THAT much of a manchild) or read the books(I know they're slop), so I thought reading their lore would be a good way to pass the time but even that didn't seem all that well thought out. It's like they came up with a lot of cool concepts/premises but didn't bother to flesh it out beyond that .
This isn't the "neurodivergent world building" that nerds promised me . Worst part was how underdeveloped the "God Emperor" himself was.

The game was more geared towards "your dudes" with the setting being more mysterious and uncertain. Lots of homebrew and kitbashing was encouraged and showcased on white dwarf editorials where the game designers would comment on their favourites. There's a lot of missed opportunities in Warhammer. The utter disgrace of the Eldar line using the same resin kits for 20 YEARS. Plus Chaos just being the Imperium but more spikey now is The sourcebooks mention loads of gross mutant freaks and demon worshipping Xenos but the models don't show it. The Traitors still being staunchly anti-xenos is r-slurred considering they've broken every taboo with their DEMON WORHSIP "I may worship the manifestation of Evil but Xenos are too far mate! " !chuds

1d4chan had kino summaries of 40k lore but the admins don't get shit done and the site is currently offline. Or maybe they ate too much meatbread and are recovering from multiple simultaneous and devastating heart attacks.

I had them opened side by side for every topic to make sure I'm not missing any info. I would also google discussions on reddit if I had doubts.

How underdeveloped nature of the god emperor is a key feature of the universe. No one knows if he was doing something good, evil, or stupid and it makes the universe more fun and interesting.

It's a fine balance to maintain but there isn't enough to create intrigue imo. Like GOT's Valyria isn't fully explained but author gives us enough to spark your imagination.

Yeah there's way more to the god emperor than there is to valyria. Though valyria probably has the benefit of martin having some sort of idea about the truth of valyria where information about the god emperor is often vague because providing a definite answer would ruin almost all of the other lore.
That a the first of what i think is a three part series on god emperor lore of that is interesting to you. Though id recommend knowing at least a bit about the universe in general before getting into that.

To be fair, as originally created, all of that lore was supposed to be ancient history told by unreliable narrators. It was heckin' valid to interpret the Emperor as just being a 10,000 year old corpse because it didn't matter and probably made the setting better if he was dead and everything he was allegedly doing with his psychic powers was actually just Space Church Lies.

There are a handful of decent books if you like capeshit adjacent scifi, but the vast majority is utter slop. I kind of liked the first 5 books or so of the horus heresy series.
There are also some audio plays that are pretty fricking kino but its probably not accessible to someone who has no idea wtf anything means.

Peter Feheverari is v good, in a different time would be a succesful weird disturbing gothic horror writer and not writing franchise fiction

The audio drama that was most memorable was Honour to the Dead, and i think there were one or two other decent ones in the bundle that was in.

Well firstly reading the Wiki and expecting it to be interesting is like picking up a mid level collage course history book and expecting to be enraptured by vivid descriptions of war and intrigue. While the books are not the best writing, most of them pass well enough that you will at least be somewhat entertained, and the good ones will blow your socks off. If you really want to get into 40k your best bet is to watch Luetin09(narrative focused and in depth) or Isyander & Koda(informational and entry level). The problem with trying to get into 40k is the amount of lore that intertwines, as well as the ambiguity. Most of the story is left to interpretation so that the reader/player can make up their own canon.

I miss the impression of 40k I got from reading 1d4chan articles in middle/high school. Some franchises are truly best experienced through wiki lurking without ever playing the game.

Correct, if you're not playing the tabletop it's a waste of time. I don't really like the setting, science fantasy is a hard sell for me and Warhammer goes way too hard on the fantasy.

It's not supposed to be one grand story by a single dude like Lord of the Rings, it's just a setting with no high canon (except The Regimental Standard) and a bazillion different writers. You have to read a book or play a game or something to actually enjoy it.
Most of the world building (and what you're reading on Lexicanum) is done in codices and the rulebooks, in terms of basic construction of "this is what the world of 40k looks like" with the addition of "this is what 40k looks like from the perspective of [faction]" in the codices. Naturally these aren't intended to be actual stories, they just provide some background on why your dudes are fighting the other dudes.
1d4chan is the superior wiki anyways.
